I’m building a bow I’m swapping a fella for a bow of his. He is a frequent flyer here, but I can’t remember his name at the moment? :) I’ll just give a description of the bow in mind. 65-66” ntn, 38-41 at 28”. I’m calling it The Tale of Two Billets.

These billets are far from sisters. Matter of fact, they arent even from the same state. But they were both at the same time and month and aged next to each other. Crazy huh?

Its a fine line between too tight and too loose with the c- clamps. You want glue left behind, but you also want to see a touch ooze from every inch of glue line so you know there arent any air gaps. 3 medium size clamps has always done the trick for me.

It looks to be mostly straight laterally. A slight dry heat tweaking on that near limb maybe.

Looks good from the road. I cleaned it all up and found my center line tip to tip, and laid out the grip/fade length lines. Its rare I sway from my usual numbers. 3" fades and a 4.5" grip. I adjust for a persons hand size by the circumference more than the length of the grip. I'll find my width profile next and then off to the saw.

Just to help clarify Arvys last 3 piece permanent build. In the second pic you can see two pieces in that planter stand. That is what he used to build his cool bow. There are "belly fat" that you hog off the depth to make it look like it does in the 6th pic.

Jeff, I will shape the grip and wrap it in leather. Its the only way to cover it up completely.
Thanks Jim. I'll snap a few pics as I go. Nothing too crazy. Kind of buildalongesque.

Pearl I like the way you put the splice in on a angle . Not sure for reason but I bit I see it before the leather goes on. Looking good. Hey is that swap for me since you won't share who it is? Arvin

Had big intentions tonite, but unfortunately my saw is in my garage and only gets ran outside, its raining. One day I will have my monster wood shop with all the bells and whistles. Anywho, I laid out the profile. I'm very particular about my lay outs because I believe that's where great bows start. That's why I use the circle template and not just my highly tuned eyes.

looking good Chris. I see the virtual bow meet on pa site got you inspired. Great to see you catch the bug again my friend.
You know you can rough those things out with a draw knife and a rasp.lol. I guess if I had a nice saw I maybe would use it to.

Looks good. I agree that creating an accurate front profile first is important. It better allows for very accurate thickness tapering, and together, they allow things to move forward without some hurdles one would encounter otherwise.

Fresh off the saw. The rest of the work is all done with a few rasps and a few scrapers. Do yourself a favor, cut to the outside of the lines and use a rasp to get closer. Saws are a fabulous tool, but can also ruin a blank in a second, literally.

Patrick, the circles are centered over my center line. They ensure even width when I want it and an even width taper when I want it.I connect TDC of each circles to get my profile lines, as you can see in the pics.
BJ, a good saw will chew up any wood. I haven't met a piece of wood the Grizzly wouldn't run right through, even with crap blades.

Pretty much how I do it Arvy. You can see my mid limb pencil mark. The circles from fade to mid are 1.5" round, then I drop down an 1/8" every 3" until I get to the tips.

Pearl, if you were making a shorter bow would you compensate for the shorter limb distance from mid limb to tip by changing your 1/8" every 3" taper?

Yes, just a bit. I might drop an 1/8" every 2" rather than 3". I rarely make a bow under 64" nock to nock, very rare nowadays.
