What’s the best tool or way to taper cedar shafts?

I don,t do many so I use 3Rivers Tru Center V2 taper tool. WORKS great.

The best type are The Wood Chuck tapper grinder, but they’re not made anymore.

I use the Bearpaw for nock and point taper. Or are you asking about tail or barrel taper? I make a jig for that. Pretty easy, would be glad to share that info if needed.

The little blue "pencil sharpener" type works just fine, I think they're sometimes called trad only or some such thing. They do dull after a maybe 2-3 dozen, and need to be replaced. I also use a Bearpaw Deluxe, which is very nicely made and has replaceable blades. I use both; sometimes one helps get a more perfect taper, but the Bearpaw is my go to tool.

As a side note, I also get good tapers on Doug Fir or Sitka Spruce with those tools, but the blade needs to be sharp, and the Doug Fir sometimes needs a little more care in the process.

POC is easily done with a pencil sharpener type of tool you can get from 3 Rivers Archery. They are made in the size of your shafts (5/16, 11/32, 23/64). They work well but I still like to spin the shafts with a cordless drill. Most any other shaft, the best thing is a power disc sander with a guide.

I can't get the hang of the wood chuck or disc sander with jig. I prefer perfect taper cutting tool.

I put a disk sanding blade in my table saw and have a guide board made that allows both tapers to be ground perfectly. No taper tool will do better.

This is my set up i built these in my previous ocupation

I run it in my drill press i can taper hard woods like cedar the stop is preset in the blocks . I have the hand tool they do ok . if i want to make a small amount .

The taper is within five min i checked them with a sine bar .

Rooty thanks it does work good the only hang up was needing a good drill press .i made and sold some but they are expensive to make .it takes time to make each peice and i have different size blocks for the sizes of shafts .

I use the tru center tool, old one, with drill motor attachment. Or I have a WoodChuck as well. BUT lately on my better arrows I am using the TOP HAT screw on points. Only downside to this system is upfront cost. But I got mine gifted to me.

I now use tophat points. Great selection from Germany.

Glad I don't have to set up my drill press to do tapers. One knurled nut sets up my sander for either taper.

I have a work shed full of power tools but somehow I enjoy tapering cedar arrows the old fashion way. The only way in the field also. Deno

Boker Your welcome if you only do a small amount of arrows the tool from three rivers is ok and the tool form Bearpaw is ok . Now let me say this and i know this for sure i measured them both i have both the guides on the tools vary some meaning on some shafts the three rivers tool will be a bit snug a few thousands so it is hard to turn by hand in the tool what i did was changed it . Now on the Bear paw the point taper does not cut as nice of a taper but the guides are closer to most shaft sizes .It does mean that the shafts sizes affects a lot of how well the tools work This is why i built my own tooling a long time ago .Now these are measurments i have taken of shafts that are cedar bear paw spruce hard maple and some ash so they are what they are you cannot change them all that much .Cedar varys some the old Acme was the best true uniform there was in my opinion . i still have some of them . the newer Rose City are always a bit big for my tooling i have learned to adapt and make good tapers .Joe

I meant to say, give them your draw length and they come tapered, both ends.

The only way to get a good taper is to grind it . This looks good to me it all comes down to how many and how accurate you want.

I have a little harbor freight sander ,

Has a disc on one side and belt on the other

I Guess I just need to build me a taper jig to work with it.
