I finally found, after much searching, a nice little Osage tree to harvest! Split it up into five nice clean staves about 80" long. Debarked, ends painted and carefully stashed in the basement. Amazingly hard work that I hope will pay off with a few nice self-bows for myself! Ha. Ben

Looks great. If you left sapwood on you might want to seal back a couple more times. Sapwood likes to get deep drying checks.

They look like really nice staves. I'd take Bjrogg's advice about the sapwood or remove the sapwood altogether & then seal the backs. Don't worry about chasing a heartwood ring now...you can do that when you make the bows. Good luck.

I don't know if it will be a problem in your basement, but I always spray mine for bugs. I lost a pile of premium osage many years ago due to bugs and have never taken a chance since then.

I’ve never had problems with bug if I remove the bark and sapwood. But they certainly can ruin some good wood. Have had several given to me that I had to go down several rings to get past the bore holes

Nice looking staves. I agree with removing the bark and sapwood. Put a couple coats of sealer on the backs and ends. I've been cleaning up staves from my garage. I left the bark on a few and they have borers in them.

Very nice clean staves. I agree with Brian, seal the backs and ends. When I first started I used whatever was on hand, latex house paint, wood glue, etc. I now use paraffin wax in the canning isle of the grocery store. Also used the wife's old half used candles. John

Seal ends with anchor seal, beeswax from bee keepers or paraffin wax. Spray for bugs with Bora -care from DIY Pesticides online or suitable solution. Nice looking staves, hope the work out good for you.
