I am just starting to attempt cresting arrows

I have read paint pens are a good option for beginners

But I have a few questions

When searching paint pens

Oil base enamel , water based Acrylic

are a few of the varieties I have seen.

Which is best for cresting?

Is there a certain brand of marker I should be looking for

I am using krylon spray paint to do a crown on carbons then wanting to add cresting.

Thanks.

I’ve had good luck with Sharpie brand paint markers.

I've never used paint pens, but have used just regular markers such as Sharpie and Bic.

I didn't like markers. Went back to model paint.

I tried some regular sharpie makers not the paint pens just as practice and to see if my dyi crester was going to work.

The crester worked great and marks did well

The color wasn’t vibrant very dull on a plain wood grain carbon shaft but I was surprised that they was durable and the color would work depending on the look you wanted.

Yet to try them on a white crown but they may work even better.

I am thinking I’ll order some regular water based acrylic paint pens soon.

Found several post on other forums where individual stated that’s what they used with good results.

How do you get those hair fine lines with a paint pen?

Just did these crestings, with fine point Sharpies.

How can you spine the arrows to make the marks without having to buy an expensive crester?

Nice arrows romanator. Really like the self nocks with the footings.

Nice arrows, Ron!

I tried the sharpie markers once. Just wasn’t happy how they streaked even with a protective finish over them.

Only thing I don’t like about the paint pens. The ones I used dried up to quickly. Otherwise I believe they are a great idea.

ive used the paint pens,

they work great if you keep the rpms low on the crester.

My opinion is that they suck.

Paint pens work well enough as do sharpies, unless you're entering a crown/cresting competition. I finished some display arrows, and have had many complements on them, even from old heads on here! And they last, if you store them well.

I don't care for them.

I've used sharpies and paint pens with no cresting machine... I just rotate the arrow on a simple spin tester (basically two pairs of rollers), and try to brace my hand as I spin. I like the look of them being a little more hand-done. I still use black sharpies for both fine or broad lines, just choose how fine a point (extra fine to wide chisel). I have also used paint pens - probably sharpies - in white, and silver... haven't been all that pleased with those. Picked up a few colors of water based acrylic (about $1.49 apiece), and will be trying those on my next set of arrows.

Faber Castel Pitt Artist pens are way better than Sharpies.

Thanks for the complements, guys. I use water base Minwax Polycrylic (clear satin), to overcoat the cresting and it works great. My Favorite clear coat is Dalys PROFIN. Costly but well worth it. In a dip tube, it runs off like water and dries quickly. You can redip in 20 to 30 minutes, easily. Try it and you will love it.

Romanator- your arrows have exceptionally nice details.

I tried sharpies as well but just didn't care for them either the look I had gotten. It looked cheap to me and gave up that idea.

Hi guys, and gals. I have to make full disclosure, in that the footings and self-nocks are not of my "hands". Those are the work of the talented Ted Frye , owner of Raptor Archery out in Oregon. I wanted those for strength and weight; they are tapered Douglas Fir and the Footings and Nocks are Osage. They flow superbly out of my Raptor Osage self bow. Ted is a great guy and Bowyer. Thanks again, everyone.

My answer was deleted so I will rephrase it to say I don’t care for them at all.
