Would you consider the grip on a Bear Super Kodiak a high wrist? How does it compare with a Bear take downs grip? I realize that it is best to try before you buy but at this time of year there are no shoots going so I'd just like some thoughts on this. I almost pulled the trigger on a Super Kodiak but it looks like the grip may be a bit too high for my liking.

i just sold my super kodiak because i did not like the grip, it was to big/thick in the grip for me,now the bear td , i love those grips on all the different risers that i have, old or new risers. if you have big hands the super kodiak will fit your hands,

I have an 18 Phenolic SK and a 19 TD A riser and the grip is indeed higher and thicker on the SK.

I think I could live with the thicker but the higher is what worries me.

It is a higher wrist.

The closest you are going to find to the BTD in a short bow is the Cheyenne.

Time for a leap of faith. I'm going to give it a try. Hope for the best!

You'll only know by trying. But I'm with the others here. I found the thicker and higher grip on the SK not as comfortable as my TD. The TD is a 2017 or early 2018 (A riser) and the SK I had was a 2018 or 2019 Phenolic. The grip on my TD is slim, medium to low wrist, and has the shelf cut really low - right on top of my hand.

The SK grip was not bad per se, but a littl thicker, higher wrist, and higher shelf. I just didn't love it.

I have owned a couple of Super Kodiaks. Only owned one takedown. I think the grip angle on both of them is very similar, but will agree with others that the Super Kodiak grip is fatter . I consider the grip angle to be a medium high grip . To me the Super Mag 48 or Kodiak Hunter is a High grip. For me personally I prefer the Super Grizzly, it has a medium wrist grip and shoots as good as the Super Kodiak or the Takedown. I like a low wrist grip the best so I usually shoot a Longbow but when it comes to a Recurve I lean towards the Super Grizzly. The good thing is you can’t go wrong with any of them because they are all great bows. Best of luck with your decision.

The 69 I had I would have considered it to be a medium with a smaller grip between a low and a medium on mass. Too small and not particularly comfortable. I was not impressed with the bows performance either, awfully slow.

I just picked one up one and I love it. Seems like a medium grip very open. It actually caused me to push my go to Jim Brackenbury Legend to the side for a while.

I messed up there my apologies I was thinking you were talking about it Kodiak special for a while there.

My current go to hunting bow is a 1966 Kodiak with a grip I did not originally like and a raised rest which I also do not like.

I will attach a pic of it with my backup bow.

File is too big to load. Side by side the grips are very different, but the result is the same.

I have three Super Kodiaks. Two 1972 models ( middle and right ), and one 1997 model ( left ). I'd say the grip is a medium grip. The grip and shelf are slightly different between the 1972s and the 1997. I have five Bear Kodiak Takedowns. A 1984, 1989, 1996, 1997, and a 2016. And the grip and shelf on them all have a slightly different feel, except for the 1996 and 1997 models feel the same.

With the Bear Kodiak Takedowns I like the feel of the 1984 and 1989 best. The Bear Super Kodiak I like the feel of the 1972 models best. Between the 1972 Super Kodiaks and the 1984 and 1989 Kodiak Takedown which do I like best ? WoW that would be hard to decide because I like them both.

It's best to shoot both the Super Kodiaks and the Kodiak Takedowns including ones from different years and decide which ones feel and shoot the best for you.

Thanks for all the input guys. As was mentioned above there are differences in the grips of the same model of Kodiaks both takedown and Super. After thinking about it I have shot a lot of different bows over the years and although the grips were different on all of them, I just got used to how each grip was made and never gave it another thought. So I can't actually count on getting a S.K. or Takedown with a grip like one that I have tried in the past, I would need to try that particular bow which is not possible right now. So that's where the leap of faith comes in. I think that I will be able to get used to whatever the grip turns out to be. Thanks for all the comments. Your opinions are appreciated.

That's considered a medium grip, but there are still variances in "medium" grips as mentioned previously. Personally I prefer the 1970 thru 76 Super K grips. Bear was more consistent with grip shapes back then. Should be better now, but I see more variances now from bow to bow in the same model. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions; they're like butt holes everybody's got one and most of them stink. Just saying.

Everyone has an opinion on what is good and not so good. So in my humble opinion, I love the Super Kodiak, grip and all. I have several of them along with a bunch f other bows. I always go back to the SK. In my very humble opinion, the Super Kodiak is the most solid bow made dollar for dollar. It is stable in the hand, shoots plenty fast enough, has classic looks and it was also Fred Bears primary bow. I doubt you will be disappointed if you got one. Rick

My ‘72’ has a grip I like but the 90 something I didn’t. Also the later bow had a higher shelf than I liked. I didn’t pay a whole bunch for it so I took my Japanese saw to it and lowered the shelf. Then I took bow to the woodshop and using a belt sander made the grip lower. Some fine sanding and a few coats of Tru-Oil and it’s “mine”. It’s not my everyday bow but when I pick it up and shoot it the bow doesn’t disappoint me.

Bluesman in that pic. the grip doesn't look quite as high as some others that I have seen. That I think would work for me.

I didn't need another bow, I already had a bow....but I heard so many good things about Super Kodiaks that I picked this 64" 1970 up in my local Craigslist a month or so ago after receiving some good information from folks on this forum, especially Nemophilist. As far as I'm concerned, every good thing they say about them is true.

My 2019 was a medium to high and the throat of the grip was super thin . But I’ve handled others that were twice as thick. Depends on who finished it at the factory I suppose

Just an update for those of you that replied to this thread. I got the S.K. and have been shooting it the past week. When I just hold it in my hand the grip feels different then I am used to but when I actually shoot it the grip feels good. I am very accurate with it. Thanks for all the input. It was very helpful. I am glad that I made the purchase.

I’m glad you are enjoying your Super Kodiak. They are fantastic bows ! Between the Super Kodiak and the takedown I like the Super Kodiak the best. Hope you get lots of years of fun out of it . Let’s see a picture. What year did you get ?

Yep, glad you got the bow and glad you like it sir!!! The Super Kodiak has always been my favorite bow and I agree with those above that it is a hard bow to beat. I tell folks all the time that I have owned and shot a lot of bows, many that were very expensive and custom made. No other bow was able to put so much good stuff together in one package for me as the Super Kodiak and the take downs. They do have different grips though and it has to be a matter of who finished it at the factory. I followed this thread and was certain if you got one you would like it...I don't recall ever hearing of anyone that got a Super Kodiak saying, "nah, I don't like this thing"......

Now to add a great string. You will be pleasantly surprise by the performance difference with a Bloodline 99 string.
