I'm on the hunt for my birthyear bow in a Super Kodiak. Its the 1974 Red Stripe with Fascor. I know the red stripe is an indicator as is the white writing from what I gather. Dark wood with the horns the same color as the rest of the riser. What serial numbers or other identifying features should I be looking at to distinguish a 74 from a 73? Any other tips would be great. Thanks!

Thank You Mr. Stout! The number on the bow in the catalog helps me narrow it down I think.

73's have the specs written in gold ink. 74's used white ink...otherwise the bows are identical...and i'm sure there is some crossover.

I think they probably used a 1973 bow in the 1974 catalog. Looks like I have misjudged the serial numbers and got the wrong bow. I think there were quite a few 73's with white lettering also. Someone on Facebook Bear Collector page indicated his 18493 is a 73. He is pretty confident on the year based on a label on the bow from the owner. The one I got coming is 18099. Based on that mine would be a 1973. It has white letters. Same guy mentioned the last 74 was 20916 making msinc's bow one of the last 74's made. I sure hope this thread doesn't get yanked by the moderator.

I have 16434 and 18643, both with white lettering. I'm sure there is some crossover with the letter coloring. If someone has some definite records I would be curious myself.

Seems like there is a lot of info out there on Bear bows but nobody knows when 73 stopped and 74 began by the numbers.

Models changed in September and catalogs didn't come out until the end of the year. Couple that with Fred not wanting to waste anything, material or otherwise and you can have overruns rather easily. The beauty is, if you can't even figure it out with the catalogs, hardly anyone else will either.

In the end it really doesn't matter a whole lot either way. I was trying to find my favorite model from the year I was born but looks like that might be almost impossible. I guess I will just have to try to trick myself into believing its the right one since they look identical regardless if 73 or 74.

In that era it appears bows were sometimes assembled one year but not finished and sold until the next year.
So assembly in 1973 but out the door in 1974 is a possibility.
Just be happy you were not born in 1951.

Heat, I have a 74, as you know based on the serial number...it looks like you already have one on the way?? Or am I reading this wrong?? Are you concerned with the weight of the bow?? I can certainly sell you mine if interested. One thing I would add, and we might have discussed this before, the 73-74 models would fade over time. I don't know how many they made, but it seems like there couldn't have been too many because they are sure hard to come by. It also seems like when I do find one the colors are faded. The "midnight black" fades out to "light gray" and the "crusader red" stripe and limb tips turns into light pink. I don't know if it's time or light, probably both but as if it's not hard enough to just find the bow itself...now you gotta find one that's not faded away to almost clear maple. The point to all this is that you probably want to make sure, when and if you do find one, that the seller sends photos first. Otherwise you could end up like me when I finally opened the box of my first one, "surprise!!!!!!" it sure wasn't what I thought it would be. Looking at the 74 catalog photo and then actually putting my hands on a faded out light gray with happy light pink accents was a real disappointment!!!! I would hate to see that happen to anyone else. I know with stuff like this you kinda gotta take what is available and like it, but I am saying be prepared to possibly have to accept less than perfect. Best of luck!!!
