I was cleaning the basement and thought it would be neat to see your archery/hunting collections. Most guys have picked up things they value over the years..show 'em off! Anything related to your enjoyment of traditional archery- bows, books, broadheads, arrow points, arrows, you name it

Just keep in mind that this is an unsecure site and that your name and home state are in the clear. That said, here is a tulipwood Helmsdeep and a Bubinga Kanati.

That sliver on the left I'm actually going to try to get a small low weight bow out of, as my actual first try. It's pretty darn stiff. Will finally begin to work it after holidays. Just not the time to spend on it yet, contrary to all the expert advice I received on doing it wet.

Thanks, Chris. I need to get back on that...I think its dry now. Been in the garage loft since last spring. It gets hot up there. Here is some more fun stuff related to my bow season. This guy is still out there but all I've seen are his tracks so far. And one afternoon I got close to him on the way out because I could smell him strong in his core rub line area. Real close...tarsal gland smell was strong.

That's my archery goal in a nutshell. One week of late season next week. Cut short for a trip to NYC (get a rope). I'll take any decent buck or adult doe now though because its down to the wire.

Some of my 'gear', and someone else's lost paintball tube. When I shot at this while stumping, I thought it was a beer can. These Zwickey's are my go-to head. Got a bunch of them left, but lost two this year on misses - a jake, and a big doe.

Love that stuff. Murph, nice collection of stones. Must be a thrill finding those when you do. I like the insulators, esp. the blue one. I collect those too. Don't have a blue one though. Ever consider knapping a head out of the top of one of those that's broken?

I guess what I'm posting is my collection of pics more than of my actual 'collections'. This next one is of a hunt one magical morning this season. Got out in the dark to the corn lot, and the sunrise was dazzling. As it was starting to wane, I spotted a lone bird on the edge of the far end of the corn lot. He started working along the edge toward me. I ducked back in after taking this pic (he wasn't there yet).

From: TrapperKayak
Date: 05-Dec-19

TrapperKayak's embedded Photo

He worked to up to this shot window, but when he got there he spotted my form against the light corn and silhouetted against the sky and didn't like what he saw. He turned and walked back the way he came. That's when I stepped out and drew and loosed. Arrow whizzed an inch to the left of his neck base. I really wish it had connected, would have been a great kill. He flew off toward the woods at the shot. Still, a good experience on that beautiful morning.

The sunrise just prior to that bird's appearance. It was the peak of the fall colors too. Its what makes bowhunting in NY special. If it appears purple or blue here, it was really bright orange. The pics colors aren't the same as they look on my phone.

This is the spot I snuck to for the last hour or two of regular bow season. The big 9 crosses hear regularly. I was waiting next to a small hemlock under a dark canopy of larger ones for him. What appeared was a very large lone doe, and I wasn't quite ready. The phone got me again, texted wife to tell her I was gonna be late, and just put it away when I looked up and that fat doe was in the brush in the left of this pic, mostly obscured by the berry bushes, so no shot. I don't know how she got there from the right without seeing me. I got ready, bleated the can a couple times, and she moved back to the right. stopped facing me, I thought she was gonna walk right over to me. She then turned left again with her head hidden by the tree left of center. Her shoulder and ribs were in that foot wide/tall hole in the middle. I drew and failed to come to complete anchor when I released. It all happened kinda fast, as usual. I had tome to anchor though. Just didn't, got excited. The arrow went through the hole perfectly but slid just under her ribs/ chest and I heard the wood arrow clank off the base of that tree root behind her. I never found it.. :X

From: TrapperKayak
Date: 05-Dec-19

TrapperKayak's embedded Photo

The shot window was the square hole where that tree base is at the bottom, in the center. Her chest was in the middle of it. I stepped it off at 30 steps after the shot. Arrow skipped off the root. Could not find the arrow after the snow melted a week later either. But the miss kinda hurt, it was a good hunt, but again, another miss. This is not an easy game. I feel like Romo at QB, 2nd best, definitely not Brady. More practice, I must do. I have one more chance, late bow. Maybe I'll get a chance at one of the two P&Y candidates I've seen, now that I have been generously signed up for the club by Treeline over on Bowsite last 'giving Tuesday'. Thanks, Tavis! That would be nothing short of a miracle. This is my collection of stories and pics from this year more than gear. :)

Problems with my transfer of photos from phone to computer. So many photos on phone I crash when I transfer cuz entire collection ques up..over 1000..and I only want last five. Anyhow, earlier this year I bought these shafts with no knowledge about them except they were old. Three weeks ago I was able to purchase a few dozen more. I saw the original receipt dated 1968 Port Orford Cedar. Spine still unknown but for what I paid I figured I will buy a bow to tune if necessary :)

So, anyhow, I built a simple cresting jig and running off an electric drill made some arrows. They fly well from my 53#HH and Dwyer, but they are heavy. It has been a fun addition to the hobby and at 20 yds. they thwack the target loud.

Bjrogg, the gray one is the HHB, or the 'natural' one? papabear, Puppy is a beggin' drooling food addict that cares little about anything else, unless its going for a ride. His favorite thing is eating treats in the car. He's a foodaholic. He's a good boy, a lot more affectionate than when he was younger. He's not much of a guard dog/protector though. Not a mean bone in his body.

Nice dog pictures TK. Love that pile of antlers. Reminds me of one I saw on TV once. I think if I remember right it was Sarah Palin's dad's collection on his front lawn. Which reminds me. I think he had a skull collection to. I have a small skull collection to.

Yes the fourth one over is HHB. It's actually stained with something but not dark. It's pretty no frills, but a good hard hitting bow.

I've got a bunch of HHB bows I've made myself. It's a good bow wood. Not as forgiving as Osage. But it makes a good bow.

reddogge, I LOVE DECOYS!!!! That's how I started carving before I switched from wood to stone. Most all are out there in the world somewhere. A couple came back to roost from hunting friends families after they past way. All the others have been in storage for so long, I don't even know what I have.

Here is an eagle I carved from a Kansas limestone fence post. John

Cool collections fellas.

It takes a certain mindset and dedication to be a serious collector. My brother is that way. I'm not, really.

I tend to collect stuff to be used, rather than to be collected for sheer preservation, but I certainly see the value in preservation too.

I have 'collections' of old drawknives, hand planes, carving tools, antique saws, axes, hammers, staves, some two or three times my age, but use them. I have 'collections' of antlers, horns, skins, leathers, piles of exotic and figured woods, don't even know anymore what all I have, but dig em out and chop them up as needs arise. It's all destined to be used to create something of more value... ultimately, hopefully.

Nice job on the fowl Reddogge.

Nice. How about a finely focused close up of one?

A good friend/coworker of mine was a waterfowl carver and won some awards. I wasn't into them per se, but as with any craft worthy of substantial effort, greatly respected him for his dedication and acquired skills and could look at his creations all day long.
