for those using plaids as camo ,is there a particular color you find more productive than others?

From: KT Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 03-Dec-19

A lot of good choices but gray and black is my preference.

From: fdp
Date: 03-Dec-19

Not really. Although MY preference is for earth colors. Browns, greens, blacks.

From: Mike E
Date: 03-Dec-19

Nothing seems really more effective than the others. Early season I use TreeBark. My plaids are wool shirts, red/black, browns, earth tones/colors, with a Woolrich vest, after it gets cold, I use them underneath brown and grey pullovers.

From: lawdy

Asbell evening stand brown for 10 years or so.

From: Skeets
Date: 03-Dec-19

I use red/black large pattern wool shirts or jackets. I have had 3 does within 5 feet of me one time when I was still hunting. I got caught in the middle of what used to be water hole so there was no cover. They walked by me like I wasn't even there. They probably knew I couldn't shoot them because I was hunting a public hunting area that had already reached the doe quota!

Like every body said. this past season a guy I was huntng with all camoed up. asked me if I always wore flanel shirts, yep. I got a 6x6 and a blacktail buck. He got tag soup. As long as patterns are broken up its all good

Main thing I look for is relatively large patterns with a good amount of contrast.

I don't own it but always thought Asbell Timber Ghost looked good.

I have a bunch of different patterns. Earth tones do well for me- the buffalo plaid is also a favorite of mine.

I lean towards lighter plaids as most predators are dark

Timber Ghost as shown above fits in about everywhere in the Fall and Winter woods. Maybe not the best for the full green woods of the Summer, but you obviously don't need a coat in the Summer.

From: Woods Walker
Date: 04-Dec-19

What makes wool (of ANY pattern), so effective is that wool doesn't reflect light, but diffuses/absorbs it, and is....Q U I E T.

But all these positives are negated if the wearer can't keep still and is focused more on his phone than the woods around him.

From: Roger Norris Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 04-Dec-19

I've been trying to post a pic this morning but it must be too large.

I have used Timber Ghost in Wyoming, Idaho, farmland Michigan, big timber Michigan.....it would be my choice if there was only one pattern to choose from.

That said, wool/plaid combine to blend very nicely regardless of the pattern. I have messed around with different plaids, taking pictures in color and black/white. Bottom line for me...stay in the shadows, they all work.

As an aside, plain gray wool might be the best camo ever....

From: George D. Stout
Date: 04-Dec-19

Woods Walker is correct about wool, it absorbs light and doesn't reflect it. It's not color, it's things like reflected light, but most of all it's movement. As said above, nothing will work if you can't keep your antsy self still; this is more important when hunting from the ground or obvious reasons.

Anyway, contrast is important as well and trumps color choice in my opinion. Commercial camos are made to attract human eyes but many don't do much but create a glob in the woods. If that glob could sit still, it would work better too.

This is the Evening Stand Green I wanted to see what the picture looked like in the antique look or black and white taking color out of the picture itself. Not sure exactly how I did that but I'll show a color one as well..

Asbell ESB or ESG. Morning Mist is pretty sweet too.

iv had deer 5' from me wearing a blade orange jacket. iv had deer bust me 20' up a tree in full camo including face paint from 75 yards. it depends on a lot of factors mostly the sun then background & time of season etc. I really like fleece & there's plenty of camo fleece for sale at the end of winter each year of course I have some wool & it's great in wet weather but I like fleece much more. except wool socks nothing beats wool socks

I love the Timber Ghost pattern this time of year. Hunting from tree stands with most of the leaves gone it really helps break up your outline. I also have a wool jacket I picked up a few years ago at a flea marker for a few dollars it’s has bigger squares of brown and grey. To my eyes it disappears against a pine tree. Lots of good choices out there

Don't know how the previous picture appeared on my post (it's not mine and I'm left-handed), but here is the intended photo (I hope).

Nice collection there Vanhethof! I like the 3rd one from the left, kind of 'ASAT' in coloration which is my favorite modern camo. If treestand hunting my woods, I'd be wearing the gray plaid one on the left before the 'VT green tuxedo' one.

But like many of you, I too am wearing more and more wool products. Much of that came from my black powdah hunts, wearing handmade wool clothing to copy that the early French Milice (militia) or Courier de Bois (runner of the woods) wore in 1740s, but the practicality cannot be beat and easy applies to bowhunting.

Wool ... it just cannot be beat!

I wear treebark coveralls & an old woolrich vest. Also wear a lined thinslate light gray, brown black hoodie with camo fatigue pants. When it turns cold I wear gray wool bibs, with combinations of wool vest & hoodie that's plaid.

From: timex

I don't know this for a fact but it's been said many times that deer see in black & white & if this is true than the color is irrelevant & the best pattern would be the ones that have the most contrasting light & dark patterns

I use different colors for different landscapes, but probably not necessary for most game animals. My favorite pullover is a gray pattern that blends well with timber.

I love the thought if hunting in plaid, I looked but have had a hard time finding colors I want in my size 3XLT, Most of the newer plaid seems to have blue as a many color and it’s said deer see blue very well. I have read the the buffalo plaid (red/black) is a good color. However I like to hide from the ppl as well when bow hunting.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 06-Dec-19

Boker, it is 'thought' that deer can see blue but it is not known for sure if they do or how it affects them. I've killed deer at very close range while I was wearing blue jeans and they didn't seem to notice. To me, color of any kind is not an issue. It's movement or noise, but mostly movement. What a deer may be able to see is still an unknown thing, even them supposedly detecting UV is not assured, only assumed due to the makeup of their eyes. That said, hunters spend hundreds of dollars on clothing that they think is best. It's good for the economy.

That reminds me I have some grey woolen Swiss Army pants to try out.

I agree George. I set up in the wide open just this week because other hunters were in the woods when I got there and I didn’t want to fumble around looking for a lot of cover in a new area.

I had a doe walk within 30 yards 360 degrees around me, see obviously saw me and probably even smelled me but since I didn’t move a muscle she never figured me out.

In this modern day, Hunting gear regardless if it’s high tech camo, old school plaid or anything else is more for the hunters enjoyment and a way to make money of which I am not against rather than a necessity to harvest any given animal.

Wondered about gray and deer, as gray is often kind of blue hued. My red-green colorblind friend sees Natural Gear right away, and says a long sleeve gray tshirt looks like a stop sign.
