I just ordered an Assyrian bow, so for the hell of it I tried to shoot my lighter recurves with various thumb draws. Hurts without a ring or leather guard but I did notice that drawing a bow with the palm facing down is much easier on the shoulder? I'm not about to shoot with a thumb ring but a small leather thumb protector would work. The most comfortable position was having the thumb hook the string, the middle finger over the thumb on the right side and the index finger over the thumb on the left side. Weird but comfortable for hand and shoulder and allows for a longer draw stroke. Also minimizes hand flicking away on release. Try it with a light poundage bow and see what you think.

Actually shooting usng a leather thumb tab works just peachy. I've done it off and on for many years as have many oyhers that do or used to frequnet this site.

It does require a diferetn technique, but it isn't difficult.

Tried it again, it will take awhile. Shooting off the shelf right hand have to be aware of not pushing arrow off shelf.

And you don't need to change the side of the bow you shoot from either.

If ypu are right handed, leave the arrow on the shelf as if shooting using a regular string grasp.

Move your thumb down from the arrow nock about 3/4" so you aren't touching it and in a few shots the problem with rolling the arrow off the rest/shelf should go away.
