What do you guys use in your pole barn, garage etc for target/backstops? The thinner I can go, the farther I can shoot. I can get 16 yds wall to wall maybe a bit more if i shoot diagonally. Thanks guys

Use a stall mat, compressed cardboard, compressed straw bales, a big homemmade bag target, there are a pletora of things that will work just fine.

The stall mats or old conveyor belt would probably work for a back stop. Jeffer is probably the pole barn expert. I thought he had straw bales in his videos.
Straw or hay would be a home for mice though. I've been in archery shops where they cardboard compressed by 2 X 6's and all thread.

I use the stall mat also. Built a frame to hold it vertical.

All good ideas. A commercial bag target for about $100 would work, 29" by 31". Alternately, I've used about 9 layers of cardboard and you could put a stall mat behind that. I drilled holes near the edges and bound them with zip ties. The cardboard is free at body shops and appliance stores.

Here is a detail of the zip ties. The strap and a couple of legs make it a mobile field target.

I've used the same large carton of rags in my garage for more than 25 years.

How thick are your rag targets? Your compressed cardboard targets? I was most curious about thickness I don’t want to blow thru it and into the wall. Thanks for the ideas.

Cardboard box is 18" deep. After shooting at it for awhile the rags compress into a solid mass with a void area in the front. The arrows go about 6" into the box and stop against the mass. I have never added any rags to it over 25 yrs but did rearrange the mass a couple times over that period. You could always add more rags after the void forms. I attached a sleeve to the front to hold a pizza box which can be replaced as needed or you can add a sheet of cardboard in front or behind the pizza box hold arrows in place until the next pizza.

Hi My target is outdoors so no rags. I use scrap plastic bags, old tarps, plastic dog food bags it works great and easy to pull the arrows out. Islander

My brother in law made me one using a softside suitcase he bought at a yard sale for a couple bucks. Filled it with old jeans and tee shirts. I use it when I start tuning a bow/arrow combo. I can only get about 10 yards inside.

For a backstop for your targets; Some company replaces all the conveyor belts at the nearest airport as they wear out. Call the airport and find them and ask for a small roll they are throwing out. When you hang them space them 6 inches from the solid back wall to allow the arrow to expend energy.
