You know your old wooden bows Pat. You are correct. It is a Ben Pearson Deer Slayer. Do you know what year they first came out?

Did they have a bow quiver back then? Or just back quivers?

Pearson didn't give their bows names until 1958, so that will give you an idea. Bear had 4 arrow quivers in 1958...one bolt model and a tape on. I don't know for sure about others.

Don, I have one of those hiding somewhere! I believe mine is around 40# though I’ve never shot it. Back and side (hip) quivers would have been the way to carry arrows then as bow quivers were just coming out. The bow is 40’s and early 50’s.

This bow isn’t marked. But I’d say it’s between 40 &45#. Probably threw one of those big DeadHeads about 140 FPS.

Don, the Old Hickory came as a starter kid that included arrows, quiver, arm guard, etc. The first year with the name Old Hickory would have been 1958...no names prior to that..just numbers. They also made some others of that design like Deerslayer. Here's a link to the 58 catalog.

Thanks George, I like reading about old bows. I just traded a fellow waller for a copy of The Witchey of Archery I can't wait to read it.

I don't know how many times I've read The Witchery of Archery, but likely more than half a dozen. I'm not sure what it is that keeps drawing you back; the poetic style prose or just the way Maurice describes the adventures. An awesome book and I need to get a larger copy as mine is in shambles...it's the smaller size.

I don't have any old wood bows. I do have a small collection of some pretty good modern day bowyers. I really enjoy my connection with both the bows and the bowyers. I have 5 selfbows from other bowyers and I cherish them all.
I would probably enjoy collecting some old ones, but I think I like these better.
I also have a collection of wooden arrows, Stone points, knives and other assorted items I've acquired that are made from friends. Some really talented people out there. And it's cool to have them as friends.

I put one of those back together some years back. Guess it just set in an addict and glue gave it up. I dared to shoot it once and promptly collected my money for the work and told the owner to make it a wall hanger .that thing was in about seven pieces. Arvin

It's basically how they were stored all those years. Dehydrated wood isn't always friendly when you bend it. Attics or outside garages are usually not very kind to wood bows.

I've got an old yew bow that is signed and apparently belonged to one of the best female competitors in NFAA about 60 years ago. Found several old magazine/newspaper articles telling about her and her husband (himself, a NY state NFAA president, IIRC) hunting around the world and traveling the US talking about it. I've tried to find descendants to return it to the family, but have been unable to find any.

My old Deerslayer and Sherwood hang on the shed wall. Old late 50's Boy Scout memories for sure.

I try to pick up wooden bows whenever I see them. They are a major part of our archery history, and I feel that they deserve a nice home among their friends. I often wonder about the folks who made them, what their life was like, and what they were thinking as they shaped each limb and grip. When I'm working on a recurve, I always wonder who will end up with it....will they shoot it well....will they be sucessful with it as a hunter. If old bows could talk..... Richard

Last one. Next time you see an old bow, pick it up and display it proudly. (if you have the room) Richard
