Pictured is my buck of a lifetime... until the next. Is he a booner? well, no, but he is very special... Estimated to be about 7 1/2 years old, this bruiser was a 12 point before breaking of a pair of split brow tines on one side and his single brow on the other. He also broke a 6" point that grew from his G3. Certainly a fighter!

With the help of a couple of game camera pics of him back in September we were able to come up with an estimated score of low to mid 150"s.

Now the hunt! I was nestled in to a little covey I made in a brush pile. I had cut a few limbs to help conceal me and although I felt completely visable to the prying eyes of a whitetail, I believed that given a bit of luck, I could make it happen. Fast forward to 10:17 on the last morning of my hunt. My buck come walking by me on the left at a mere 8 yards. I'm not sure how I got by with all the movement I had to make to get the shot, but I did! He kept walking and turned away. I hit him with a grunt and he stopped, turned to my right and gave me a hard quartering away at about 18 yards and I shot. To my dismay, my arrow was deflected by a lone twig. My buck whirled back to the left and the arrow struck him in the neck going through the edge of his spine and out his throat!

It was a hard track at first, but within a 100 yards turned in to constant blood. At about 300 yards, he was found dead, dead, dead! An interesting note!, while cleaning my buck, we found two blades that came off of a replacement blade type broadhead lodged in his back strap. It was an old wound that had healed up. This is my oldest buck by far, my first deer from a natural ground blind and just my next deer of many more adventures in Kansas! BigJim

I just can't express how much I enjoy my trips to Kansas and this trip was no exception.

Is It Kansas that is so special? well, it is certainly a big part of the fun... but it is more than where we are going and what we are doing. The anticipation as we wait to see the draw results, followed by the planning and deviding of responsibilites for each member of the group. It is all part of what makes "MY" Kansas trip so special. Generally, the group is made up of my employees from the shop with a few friends thrown in for good measure.

This year, there was supposed to be just 5 of us going, but at the last minute, 2 of the 5 needed to back out for family reasons.

The trip to and fro was for the most part uneventful. The hunt itself had everything that one could ask for. Lots of deer seen including mature bucks. Opportunities missed. Success, failure, and much suspence!

We all learned new lessons and can't wait to go back! BigJim

The people you meet there aren't bad either. Some of the most generous people you'll ever find.

One problem, there's not many deer and no large bucks. Tags are harder to draw so don't bother trying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to go back,

Bowmania

This picture is of Clint and myself. Both with our bucks.

Clint had a little more issue with his buck however, but finding it after everything he went through just made it sweeter for him.

Clint was backed in to a cedar tree, standing on the ground when two bucks appeared out in front of him at 20 yards. He was already contemplating taking one of the does he had been watching for fifteen minutes but he was just taking in an awesome morning and was in no hurry. Then after a slight commotion to his left, this buck appeared and came trotting by at just 12 yards. Clint hit the buck with a grunt, the buck stopped in his tracks, and then the arrow was on it's way.

The VPA broadhead struck the buck in the crease and lodged in the offside shoulder. A near perfect hit... maybe slightly high, and with no exit hole, the track would prove to be a difficult one.

After going aproximately 150 yards with decent blood, the buck made an about face and headed back to with in 50 yards of where he was shot. Unfortunatley he left no blood trail on his rearward retreat and we lost him. Clint spent the next 3 days searching! grid search, river search, and repeat. After logging in nearly 20 miles of searching, Clint found his buck. Although the cyotes had eaten the buck up to it's ears, retrieveing his hard one trophy was still so so sweet! I thought I saw him crying... :)

Clints buck is estimated to be at least 4 1/2 years old and green scores 145"s with a 21 1/4" spread. BigJIm

James Parker was the third memeber of the 2019 Kansas adventure and though he keeps things interesting, I thought many times about leaving him in a rest area some where in Arkansas! not really.. well, ok, really! James had a wonderful time as well. He made a great shot on this doe and somehow was able to pass up on multiple bucks in hopes that he too could take a Kansas giant! His story is a little simplier in that after the shot, he watched her go down in 50 yards in the road ditch. BigJim

I'm a little suspicious of the cause of that shot placement. Just a little suspicious, but congratulations on your old bruiser! It's also good to know you're not in Kansas anymore.

Let me clear something up... It was on private land however it was not a guided hunt.

I have a friend in Kansas and we hunted his place. Just the same, the plots we hunted were rather small and the outside properties apply a fair amount of pressure on the deer.

It was a great hunt... really an outstanding hunt!

Thanks Ya'll, BigJim
