sometimes the real story is in the adventure. So, yesterday here was the most blustery cold winter snowy day you can imagine.

Before the snow hit, we've had lots of rain. All of my stands run along a river mostly.

Well they were all flooded out yesterday when I arrived for an afternoon hunt.

I had two choices....go home....or go to a bit higher land and watch the trails coming out to the fields.

I didnt wanna go home lol.

So I sat just off a trail with my black widow.

30 minutes before dark I see a little buck walking right at me ( not where I thought they might come from lol)

It came somewhere ( I'll have to go back to re measure) between 10 feet and 20 feet before it tirned offering up that bs shot.

The shot was perfect and I watched the buck run out 40 yards into the field and tumble with barley a kick.

The real story tho was the sub 0 temps and crazy winds.

I had offers of help....but there's just something satifying about a complete solo hunt from start to finish.

By 9pm he was out, hung, and skun as they say.

The ol woodstove never felt so good last evening.

Salute to all those solo trad bow hunters out there.

Somehow I'm guessing you don't eat him yourself. Looks tasty. Always fun sharing that venison cooked on the grill with others that appreciate it.

Great job Congrats sticking out tough weather conditions and getting the job done. Yes, solo hunts are quite rewarding, whether or not an animal is taken. Yours is well deserved. Stay Safe/Shoot Straight. MTQuiver

nope..thats not all i have for a pic,,,but yes, like mentioned, it was just a small buck ( although even our small bucks are not all that small body wise}

Here's the more traditional "hero" shot lol.

The point was more about the weather and the long day and I nice piece of meat for the freezer of which every ounce will be cherished....in this pic u can see how beet red my dace is from that cutting wind.

To answer a question....i do sometimes pull off the hide...but this one I skinned.

Reason? I was given a custom made knife from Larry Rockwell last spring while guiding him for bears.

I dont know much about steel....but this knife has done 3 whitetails from start to finish and its gutted a cape buffalo and has yet to be touched up.

Well done...sounds like my kind of hunt. You hung in and changed tactics in the face of adversity.

And that is a big deer for the rack size!

I like the picture...I would much rather see a picture of a deer that was properly processed than the all too common (and poorly composed) "tongue hanging out" picture of an ungutted deer hours after the kill and recovery.

I was taught to gut them right away and get them cooled down. I then figured out on my own it was best to get the hide off quickly.

You'll have some epic meals!

oz....one of the best compliments I got this year was when i brought a couple deer to my butcher. He's a hunter and fantastic butcher. This last one he said " I love when u bring a deer in...so nice and clean"

Thats important to me

From: BigOzzie
Date: 02-Dec-19

It is important to me also, but I did not do so well this year was quite disappointed in myself. I guess that is why I noticed.

Hell of a great hunt. I have been out in those conditions and it can be rugged but success on a solo journey is always the way I prefer it.

Nice deer. I travel through Nova Scotia on my wat to Newfy. You do have big bodied deer there. Seen some monsters driving at dusk through Cape Breton. Wish Newfie had white tails.

"Skun".... Ha, I thought the only people who ever said that were my father and his brothers!!!

That's a heluva big deer for and "11" pointer. Good job!
