For making a whoopee sling. I have been using Amsteel to replace tree stand chain and it is expensive! Thanks TLM

I've seen whoopee slings used for hammocks, but is the friction area within the length you use, enough to prevent slippage?

Why not use a Prusik Knot?

OK, I’ll bite....

I guess I’m just assuming here that a “Whoopie sling“ is not something you would find in a Bangkok brothel...

Expensive or not, Amsteel is the best.

Longshot, Would 1/4 inch Amsteel be appropriate for substituting for a chain on stand? Thanks TLM

GF, funny.

I found this from Green belly outdoor meals: A whoopie sling is a rope designed with an adjustable loop. Arborist's designed them to hang from a tree and to be able to adjust the tension of the harness easily. Backpackers use them to hang hammocks.

Attach the small fixed eye to your hammock and attach the larger adjustable loop to your tree straps. Adjust length by pulling the tail end and let the rope feed through the bury section. It works like a Chinese finger trap: push the ends together to loosen, pull the ends away to tighten.

I used a prusic knot with confidence that came on a line with a Summit tree stand.

Its a great sling to replace straps or chain. Most have seen one, just not aware what it is called. They were used on the Old LocOn treestand instead of chain. I just don't know the type of black hollow braid that was used to make one. Amsteel is fantastic material, but I was trying to find the black braid used instead. TLM

Sounds like it might be the right thing to replace the bicycle chains that came with my climber… actually, it’s more the size you would use on a garage door opener, but you know what I mean…

I could replace the chains with more chain, but that’s not inexpensive, and those things are a lot heavier than they probably really need to be. Worst of all, though....They rust.

GF, You probably need the bite and leverage that the chain edge provides as you ascend and descend. TLM

The original black rope used with my RapidRails was polyethylene. It had a whoopee style loop. When they became worn I switched the rope to a kernmantle static line, that is, a polyester sheath on a nylon core, and I tied in a Prusik Knot to make it adjustable. I left a long tag end where the line is knotted to the ladder section. The line is thrown around the tree and the tag end is attached to the Prusik Knot loop with a simple Sheet Bend, the slack is drawn out and as the ladder section is pushed down it is then read for climbing weight, no hardware needed.

GF,

You would most likely need a large diameter rope, to maintain an arc in the section that goes behind the tree as you climb.

1/4 inch Amsteel Blue has a rated 7700# break strength with up to 4500# rated winch load. It's plenty strong enough but, I would protect is with some sort of flexible sleeve since it's still synthetic braid and under a load any inadvertant contact with a sharp broadhead would part it pretty quickly.

I thought this was to replace the two platform chains, is that correct? Or are you looking to replace the hanging chain that goes around the tree?

I’ve got a roll of the black hollow braid. I got it from Memphis twine co. There is a little tool called a fid ? that is used to thread the rope thru itself. I used it to replace the straps and buckles on my rapid rails.

Longshot, Great idea but I was just going to use it for around the tree instead of chain! TLM

Dnovo, Thanks! What diameter did you use. Ill check out Memphis twine, TLM

Memphis Twine has a Braided Poly rope that is labeled as a 1/2 inch black hollow braided polypropylene 12 mil mono fibers size 16 2;500 lb test rating. This appears to be the rope used by LocOn and Loggy Bayou back in the day. 600 foot roll for $84.00. Good deal! Thanks all for the help! TLM
