I was fortunate enough to take my largest whitetail ever the night before thanksgiving. It’s a long story but here is a short version. I was hunting in Missouri, Wednesday was the first day you could hunt after gun season. I had a stand that we had hung that I thought I would get one really good hung in because it is by a duck marsh and Thursday was opening of duck season. So I go in Wednesday about 300 pm, around 430 the deer start coming by the third deer to come by is this buck. He comes by at 500 pm, I see him coming and prepare for a shot in front of me under 10 yards. When he goes behind some cover I draw and wait for him to clear. When he comes into the opening he stops to stair at another buck so i shoot him. The the arrow hits about 4 inches behind his shoulder and exits about 5 inches behind that. He goes a short distance and acts seriously injured and disappears from sight. I wait tell dark and get down check my arrow witch has blood and a little stomach matter on it, but there is blood all over the ground at the hit. I leave and give him 4 hours(not enough time) and come back we jump in but catch him going by a camera about 200 yards from the hit. After finding the bed we looked a little and went home. Thursday morning I wake up to rain so I call a dog tracking service, they recommend with rain forecast all day and uncertainty about the deer’s health we should wait until Friday morning. We go in Friday morning and the dog gets on a track I soon doubt the dog and we end up looking around for a couple hours in the opposite direction then the way I told them my deer went. So he leaves I take my son back to where I thought my deer had went and find him in a strip pit within 10 minutes. In total the deer had only traveled a total of 250 yards, and had probably died shortly after he passed the camera I had got lung and liver and barely caught stomach. Fortunately he died in water and the temperature was in the 30s the whole time including daylight, he cooled rapidly and the meat and cape was still good.

What's your set-up you took him with? Great story and congrats on a fine buck. Those antlers are dark and look damn near polished. Very nice, great shootin'.

Yes I am very thankful. This is where we pulled him out of the pit. I was shooting a 64” Pma black widow that is 51 at my draw, and Easton axis arrows with 200 grain vpa three blades.

There are some serious highs and lows with bow hunting. I am on a pretty good high with it right now. Also for anyone that is curious and not that it matters but he scores 153”

No I am fortunate to have a very good friend that has a unbelievable property in Missouri that I am able to hunt. I am going to finish my season doing doe management for him.

Very nice deer and a great story.

Fortunate that the weather was cool. I have never gutted a deer a day and a half after being shot...what is that like?
