Just started a new bow using wood I haven't used before just to see how it works out. This is not a build along but just updates once in awhile.

In the meantime what do you think the wood is?

For the lamination's I used edge grain and the block is face grain.

I'll give the answer sometime. Just doing this for fun. - - Marc

Looks kind of like OSB. :^)

That would make me cross-eyed just looking at it. Commpressed wood shavins?

Shredded pine

From: marc of PAW

My guess also would be OSB, particle board, compressed shavings, or shredded pine but than again do those have an edge grain and face grain. Bobmeister might be correct but I understand that wood is on the restricted list. - - Marc

What ever the name of the New Wood is , Marc, it looks interesting how it will turn out. When finished you can let the wood worms out of the bag.

Marc, no I don't. But it sure looks like one celled protozoa. ;) I would probably get dizzy looking at that and fall on my bone head.

I think it’s a unknown species from the garden of Eden, or maybe from the hanging gardens of Babylon. Could be wrong....

What ever it is I don't care for it.

From: marc of PAW

For those who are interested, here it is. (DRUM ROLL)

- - HempWood - - made by Fibonacci Company in Ky. Made from hemp fiber and this is what they say about it. 20% harder than oak, more than 2,000 on Jenka scale, stability similar to Brazilian Cheery.

Do I like it? That is still open. I do like the looks of the edge grain in the limb lams.

I will resurrect this with my final thoughts and some pictures when this project is finished. - - Marc

From: Recurve Crafter ™ Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Never would have guessed hemp.

Neat concept.

The edge grain limb veneers remind me of a edge grain bocote, but lighter in color. I bet it'll look great under clear glass.

You do really nice work, so it'll be cool to see how the final product turns out.

I resurrect this post only to give you my final thoughts and some pictures of the Hempwood project.

The bow came out of the form and looked good - EXCEPT

As you can see the veneers split on both lams. I did think it could be a possibility so I had filled some voids but it happened, The fix was to strip off the glass and veneers on both limbs and replace with new veneers and glass. The new veneers needed to be reinforced so I glued stabil-kore on both sides of hempwood lam which was about .200 thick. Next I split that which gave me two strips with stabil-kore on one side of both strips. These I ground down on the wood side until I had .025 than flipped them over and took .005 off of the stabil-kore. This gave me a reinforced hempwood lam of .020 just what I needed. Glued again, back in the form, heated, cooled, reshaped, tillered, and the end result is- -

The core wood (brown) is strand bamboo flooring which I have used on many bows and like very much.

Sorry the above picture and this and reversed

The limb core wood is action-boo.

This bow is a 62" and 46# @ 28" as planed

The hempwood cuts and files like a lot of woods but I found that I could not get it to sand nice and smooth because of small fibers which always seemed to remain. I solved that by wiping a thin CA glue on the surface than doing the finish sanding.

Date: 31-Dec-19

marc of PAW's embedded Photo

The splices worked out normal with the hempwood to bamboo flooring.

Final thoughts - There are oddities with hempwood but they can be overcome. I really like the finished look (some in our bowyers guild think its spooky) and as for shooting it may have a bit of an edge over some of my other Blair model bows but I feel that is because the physical weight of the hempwood bow is heavyer which I like.

Would I build another? Its in the works. - - Marc

Tasteful lines in the handle, enjoyable textures to look at, impressive as always.

You said that the brown core wood for the handle is strand bamboo flooring? If you have the time, could you try to take another picture of the handle without the glare of the flash? I'd like to see the hempwood/ strand bamboo contrast a little better. Thanks.

Michael, I tried and hopefully this picture gives somewhat of a better view with a bit less glare.

Mike, After working with the hempwood I feel the strength is there and our group sure will put it through its testing (one fellow has an honest 30" draw) but as is said "only time will tell".

Matthew, I checked with most states and the only thing not allowed is to chip it up and burn it.

Thanks Marc. Nice to see a new sustainable product for bowyers and that it has such a striking appearance. Time will tell, like you said, if it remains stable, or if working with it over a long period of time, produces any health issues like some wood does.
