I just got my Birth year bow. Cravotta bro’s 60” longbow in almost unfired condition. I want to hunt with it next year and have a few questions. Broadheads pretty sure ACE was in business. String silencers, no cat whiskers, how about wool? What kind of quiver? Was Fred’s bow quiver out then? Sure wood shafts??? What do you all think? Thanks Arrowchucker

What no picture? I'm thinking a back quiver. I think Ace started sometime in the 30's. Good luck with the new bow.

Bear 4 arrow leather top quiver, either a single bolt into a bushing below the grip or a tape-on version. Surewood shafts are way more recent than 1958.

Ace started in business around 1927, so I think you're safe. Cliff Zwickey started making broadheads in the 1940's, as did MA- 3 (Make All Tool and Die), and Bodkin. Fred Bear used modified Zwickey heads until he developed his Razorhead. Aluminum arrows and fiberglass were around then and being widely used, but wood was still number one, mainly because it had been for so long and much cheaper for the average wage earner. P.O Cedar since it was cheap and plentiful and we had several manufacturers making arrow shafts.

I bought my first set of aluminium arrows from Herter's around 64. They were silver and very soft and bent easily. Went back to PO Cedar, it was King in the day.

Still not too clear but 458 means built April 1958. I’m a March 1958. I figure a month is close enough. 38#@28” Smooth as butter! But has some string vibrations after the shot I would like to get rid of. What did they use in 1958? I’m thinking some wool puffs, I know they had sheep! We’re Micro flights around yet! I’ll probably just use wood and ACE heads. Any help would be appreciated. I have plaid wool shirts and coats already, wear them all the time. Thanks Arrowchucker

As for string silencers back then, we used rubber bands, pieces of sponge, wool among other things and if I not mistaken brush buttons where the norm. I seem to remember little leather arrow shaped silencers.

There were fiberglass arrows shortly after the World War. Glen St.Charles talks about using them to hunt elk in 1952. Microflite was not the first to make them for commercial use.
Easton introduced the 24SRT-X aluminum arrow in 1954 as a better grade. Within the next ten years the XX75, a more durable shaft was available.

Here's a copy (link) to Fleetwood Archery's 1958 catalog. There are lots of things in it including aluminum and fiberglass arrows, sights, quivers and a lot of accessories.
