I just picked up a Young burner from my little southern Indiana buddy. My question is this. Can an already used wire be re-shaped? Or, do they become heat hardened after they are used? Thanks for the help.

Get yourself another wire. Why chance screwing up feathers. Plus in house the burner will stink up place and have a ventilated spot too is best.

Not saying can't reshape but I wouldn't. Always have spare wires around too.

Ive reshaped one wire several times. No issues at all. Pick up extras when you get the chance.

Thank you both. I asked because I don't want the shield shape it has now. I don't have much to lose if I try and it breaks.

best if have a wooden template of shape U want and bend wire around it rather than free hand and can reproduce later the same

Excellent tip, thank you James.

I cut my templates out of paint stir sticks. If you're ok w a 4" feather you should be able to get two feathers out of a full length truflight.

Keep a penny on your bench. When adjusting the wires ive found that if i set them a Penny's thickness above the shaft i get a clean burn on the feather with no scorching of the wrap or shaft. The wire grows as it heats up. Just my two cents--- or half of that anyway.

That was another thought. How close can that ribbon be to the shaft. Thanks sir.

It seams like I’m always using pretty painted woodies or aluminum or carbon with wraps. What I’ve been doing for years is I cut a pop can in 1/4” wide strips and just longer than the diameter of the arrow, wrap them around the shaft right where the fletch contacts the shaft , a small piece of masking tape holds them in place ,now you never have to worry about burning your shafts, it will happen ,save and reuse the tin strips.

Chris I have several new wires. PM me an address and I will send one off to you .

You can reshape old wires also. I have probably 15 old wires already formed into shape that my dad re-used over and over.

It is the very same wire that is used in hair dryers and electric heaters.

Jon: Its the same material, however not the same wire. The Young wires are "V" or "U" shaped. Dryer or heater wires are just round wire. The young wire will hold its shape better.

I actually have round and flat from the 60,s. Pearl can have either one if he wants.

Does anybody know of a good template for a French Curve?

I was thinking to come up with my own design for a 4 1/2”, but maybe 4” is a better idea if you can get a pair from a single full length...
