Frisky's embedded Photo

Here's a photo of 11 old Bear cedars I gave to my nephew, 40 years ago, when he was getting into bowhunting. I found one was cracked all the way through, but 10 were in good shape. I roughly re-fletched them and put on my favorite nocks, Bjorn nocks in tangerine color. In the right light, the nock looks like a little orange flame as it flies! If I don't get a shot this week, I'll change over to these arrows, along with Bear Razorheads, and go get a deer.

Here they are restored.

I guess I had already tossed out the bad one, so the top photo shows 10 and not 11.

Oh, I didn't ask for the old arrows back. My nephew was cleaning a shed and found them and brought them to me to see if I wanted them or he'd throw them out. I'm glad he remembered where he got them!

Joe - did you have to open the throats on those nocks?

From: Knifeguy
Date: 18-Nov-19

Nice Joe. What spine are they? Lance

I thought I'd have to slightly open the throats. However, they are a perfect fit on the Bear FF string. Just perfect! I don't know the spine. They would have been 45 to 50 for the blue crest and 50 to 55 for the red. However, they've been shortened. I'll just have to try them to see how they fly.

They really look good. I love the old Bear cedars. Bring back old memories. With the Razorheads they will be as good as it gets. Middle of hunting season is the best time to change your set up. I do hope you find time to slip away from the Bakery and go hunting. Your deer is out there waiting for you and I truly hope you get him. Best of luck. Your friend. Dave

Nice job.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I like them Joe. Cedars are pretty user-friendly (I hate that term but it fits) and you can get away with some messin with them and still get good flight. That bit of nostalgia also is a nice thing. Back in the day, we were getting away from the wood shafts in favor of fiberglass and aluminum. Funny how things go.

I had some of those back in the day. I tried to match that ugly brown to make some reproductions some years back. Gave up after I screwed up a couple pints of Fletch Laq. Good luck sticking one in a deer.

Those are "Bohning classic" nocks not Bjorn.

You did a nice job Joe. They aren't classic restored but anybody who shoots rag tag bows like you what do you care. LOL

Anything is good enough. But you hot rodded the arrows. LOL

Nice Job Joe.

Nice looking arrows. You sure you got enough helical in the fletch? I think I've seen less twist lookin down gun barrels. ;-)

From: Lost arrow
Date: 18-Nov-19

Look closely and you will see it’s not helical. Pay attention to the 3rd and 4th arrow from the right. Notice the ends of the middle feather are in line with the edge of the shaft but the middle curves out. Here in WV we call that the “ Belly Fletch”. Very effective in correcting excessive tuning issues. Yes sir, the Legend really has something there. Dave

aromakr- You're right! I have the Bjorns on 8 of my old blue crest Bears. I couldn't't find Bjorn, a few years ago, and bought Bohning Classic nocks as the closest replacement. Bjorns are stronger, IMO, but the Bohnings are nice. Bought the Bohnings a few years ago and forgot about them. That's where the confusion came from.

grizzly- MT Quiver was supposed to set up my Martin jig for helical but was too inept. I put the full blame on him! Of course, they'll spin fine and fly straight or I won't shoot them.

I'm going to appease Lost Arrow and shoot carbons today.

The way you shoot you should put lighted nocks on so you won't have any side memos can't find my arrow? LOL

From: Supernaut

Joe, the arrows look great! Good luck with them, I know the Legend wont let us down!

From: Frisky

I might switch to the Bears, sooner than later, as my luck is still bad. Nothing showed at all tonight.

Joe, as you may or may NOT remember, that jig has been set-up in your garage for over a year! Perhaps your cats got it out of alignment? I hate to bring up the recent past, but hey buddy, this is the gratitude I get for driving for three hours and then tracking your 2017 deer, recovered it, took time to take pictures for you, field dressed it, dragged it out of the woods, skinned it, butchered it, vacuum sealed it AND THEN I drove another three hours back to your place to locate the arrow, another three hours to locate the broadhead which your cried about not having found? Where were you when I called you on November 8th to help me track the monster buck I shot? No, you said you were too busy baking cookies and feeding stray cats to come and help me! Then too, I called you the other day and you STILL haven’t returned my call! But seriously, GREAT job on the arrows - they look professionally refurbished! MTQuiver

Frisky, are you still using the blind in the median of the Interstate ? Maybe you’re parking your car too close. Also, switch to the cedars. Only arrows I ever had that would shoot where I looked every time were Bear cedars with the “ Belly Fletch”. Good luck and getter done.

From: Backcountry

Pains me to admit this, but those really are nice looking arras with Frisky’s refletch job.

It would be interesting to see the grain quality and if there’s any runout in that old cedar. Probably isn’t.

From: Dry Bones

They look good Frisky, shoot the Cedars, that's what they were made for. If your still lugging that rattle trap wood maul around, you might should pick-up a better bow. Shame to fly those arrows from such.

MT- Meant to send pics of the arrows tonight, as I wanted to show you the helical I put into those babies that you were unable to do for me! As for the 2017 doe, just be thankful I put you through training to prepare you for the unlikely event you actually got a deer. Yes, you have my permission to show the little guy off in this thread.

Joe

Frisky

A very well done job!

They look like they have been professionally done! Can I get some?

OB55- I kind of hid the really bad ones, lol! If you saw those, you'd reconsider your request.

Frisky, not wanting to steal your thunder on this thread my buck was posted on the Harvest Thread. The “little guy” as you stated him to be turned out to be an 11 point, forked brow tine buck who had a 19 1/4 inch inside spread, a 35 1/4 inch neck circumference, and field dressed at 215 pounds. Glad you put me through the training needed to get me through this unlikely event. Now you go and show us all how it is done and once again my availability to track, field dress...will be at your disposal. MTQuiver

From: Frisky
Date: 19-Nov-19

I'll have to check the harvest thread to see that little guy.

Joe

From: OldBeginner55
Date: 19-Nov-19

Hey Frisky! I looked on the Harvest thread and MTQuiver scored a HUGE buck. Don’t think you can rightly call is a “Little Guy” anymore. Tried out those refurbished Cedar arrows yet to see how they fly? Fill us in, what’s the news!

From: Frisky
Date: 19-Nov-19

That little guy will beat RymanCat's "Big Eight." However, he's just a bit too narrow.

use them for kindling,,,,in 69 a brand new out of the box 1st shot Bear cedar broke & the back half went through my wrist,,,still knocked on the string & i had to draw the 55# kodiak to pull the rest of the arrow out. brand new dozen they gave with the purchase of a new bow at howards discount in fayettville ark. never shot another wood after that,,straight to aluminum from then on.

From: Frisky

It must have been damaged in shipping. I've shot them thousands of times without a problem.

trust me,, it only takes once.

Had an early generation Graphlex break at release and slap my arm bad. No broken skin thank goodness.
