A Veterans Day to Remember In 1966 Fred Bear came out with the Bear Super Mag. It was a 48” brush and tree stand bow. By 1969, my dad had saved enough money to purchase one. He hunted with it for years, but back then there were very few deer in Georgia. He never killed a deer with it.

In 1988, Daddy bought an old Jeep. That short bow fit perfectly in the back seat, so he carried it around with him. One day he was near John’s Mountain when he saw a huge Eastern Diamondback crossing the road. He jumped out with the bow and put an Easton XX75 right through the snake’s head.

Dad passed away in July 2018 at the age of 86. I wound up with the bow. It’s 50 years old this year. I decided that it deserved to finally kill a deer. Due to my work schedule, I have only been able to hunt a handful of times. This morning I was hopeful that I could make a little history with that bow. Logan and I headed to the stand at 5:10 am. At 6:10 I heard footsteps. What I thought was a doe, gave me a 10 yard shot and I did my part. The bow is 57# at my draw length, so the arrow zipped through the deer.

The deer ran 50 yards and stopped. Suddenly, I see a big deer coming fast from the other direction. It appeared to be a big 8- pointer. It went straight to my deer and rammed it with its horns. My deer spun around and fell on the ground.

The big buck seemed confused. He circled and kept staring at the deer on the ground. Finally, he headed up through the woods towards Logan. I quickly texted him and let him know. You can see the text conversation in the pictures.

The buck walked right to Logan and he did his job. I sat in the tree at that point with my sappy old self and my heart was full. The legacy of my dad, a veteran, that bow, me, and now Logan was special. And it all came together on Veterans Day. My deer turned out to be a button buck. Logan’s was a 6- pointer that field dressed 172#. @sitkagear #sitkagear
