I don"t know a single hunter who hasn't found themselves far from truck, camp, or trail at dusk with a big game animal on the ground. The field dressing and tag punching uses up the last remaining rays of light. Suddenly, its dark and you have a long ways to go. It's even more amplified when you are alone. You have 3 options. Call for help. Leave it overnight and comeback in the morning. Take your warm weather gear off. Roll up your sleeves and get it out. Oddly, I enjoy the 3rd choice. I've always enjoyed my time under the stars; be it pre-dawn or post sunset. It's almost magical. While I cannot see well, my sense of hearing and perhaps even smell are heightened. I enjoy the night smells and sounds. I don't rush. I revel in every hard won step that brings me closer to home. I'll sweat and use muscles like no gym workout will ever duplicate. No obsticle is too great - because there are no options. There is only the end of the task waiting ahead. Only when the meat is out and safely stored from spoilage and scavengers do I feel the long hours of a successful hunter's day are over. And it's a glorious feeling. The kind of exhaustion that only a hunter can appreciate.

Add my name to everything you just wrote, Bea, including the vision and the comfortable feeling of the dark out of doors. You did good.

Congratulations. Nice beautiful bear. I ,too, would rather get the animal out right away. And that is when you really need a compass. It wears you out to drag or walk in the wrong direction at night!

thanks....for whatever reason Ive always written my hunting thoughts down.

I'll share more here for sure....its almost like I enjoy sharing game meat....I just enjoy sharing outdoor adventures.

I feel I will be here for a while...so I'll just do a quick intro.

First may be the Bea handle. Many years ago I ran a small mom and pop outfitting business. Its now defunct, so I'm not advertising lol, but it was called Bears East Adventures. Around those years, was about when the internet craze took off, and with it, hunting forums. Anyways, I jumped in and my handle was always bearseastadventures, well, during the thread conversations, that became shortened to bea. And it stuck. Ive name business's under that name haha. Again, thanks for all the nice words....

Really enjoyed your words, I always have a means to pend the night if needed. A bear that size would fit the bill.

I love the walk home in the dark. I'm blessed to be able to walk from my spot to my home. It's all my home but it's so different in the dark. It's simply another world. Some may detest it, but I love the sound of the first coyote and the immediate response from all the others.

The big lake when it's almost still. Except for the random wave that suddenly breaks unexpectedly on the shore.

Makes me think of all the generations before that slept under a open sky. Sometimes comfortably and sometimes huddled together clinging to each other's warmth.

May you enjoy many more

Bjrogg

Ps Bea I went to your site. You have a way with words and stories I really enjoy

I lugged an 8 point buck out a couple weeks ago....with todays txting magic....while waiting in stand before starting on the trail...a good number of my buds new I was going tracking and to a person, all often to come and help me lug. Good friends are like gold !.

As I mentioned to them....{I found the deer just at dark and had perhaps only 500 yards to the tailgate of my truck.} Ive got this....my next bday I'll be 60....who knows how long I'll be able to do this by myself. I told them I was good, gonna take my time, and enjoy my time under the stars.

As we age...who knows what curveballs lay ahead for any and all of us...at some point a day will come I will need that help for even the shortest of drags/packs.....but until that time.....

The night sky can be calming, eh? A few years back when checking for blood sign after a shot (a miss) I lost my compass. New section of woods, quite thick, no easy landmarks. Looked for the Big Dipper, which shows in the Northern sky at that time of year, knew I had to travel South to find my main trail, and with the Big Dipper at my back calmly worked to the trail. Like you stated Bea, you never know how many of those experiences we all have left. Enjoy them.
