So....

Can you splice turkey feathers into goose?

I was thinking that natural Canada goose feathers might be easier to keep track of if you spliced in a flo-Orange tracer in the back.... But no idea if that’s a Thing....

Never tried it. But I think if you did, secondary turkey feather might blend better with the goose than primaries. Turkey primaries tend to be much thicker than goose.

use a full length turkey feather as the thickness changes from the top to bottom

I've never tried goose yet, have spliced turkey, sometimes I have a hard time getting them to line up correctly if the splice isn't from the same feather. I'd imagine trying to splice in one from a different animal, is a whole different animal.

My suggestion would be to splice the goose, dye the splice, and put it back. Dying feathers is simple. I've used fruit and veggies, koolaide, tang, just about anything will work. Just add dawn, warmth, and distilled white vinegar.

To get the splice to marry with the main feather, the veins have to come off the quill at the same angle and be the same thickness or you will have a gap in the splice.

Makes sense - Bootaka put it well and Bob explained it very clearly.

So thanks to all of you!

Now I guess I have to figure out what color you get when you dye Canada Goose Grey and try to get Orange...

Maybe I’ll just cap those with day-glo paint?

A marabou feather or rabbit fur tracer works well for what you are trying to accomplish. >>>>-----> ken

True enough! That would be a lot simpler....

Sure, I tie full dress salmon flies and they will marry multiple weird fibers from species you have probably never heard of. They all zip together nicely. You probably don't have to worry about the angle, but you do have to get the quills so they butt with the same separation as you would expect where they continuous.
