My bow shoulder has been giving me some grief lately so I stepped down from my 50 lb recurve to 42 lb. I've been using 175 gn VPA 3 blade heads with the heavier bow but I'm a bit concerned about adequate penetration with the light bow. I'm a believer in the two holes are better than one and I do like the VPA heads. What are your thoughts on getting complete penetration with the 3 blade head.

What are you hunting?

My old buddy Shorty (RIP) killed a number of pretty fair size hogs with his 40# @ his 26" draw, and was using the 150gr VPA 3 blades.

It didn't seem to slow him down none, although he did try to keep his shots under 20 yards most of the time.

A few of his pig kills were longer shots 20 - 25 yards, and he did not get pass throughs, or even an exit on some, but he did always get double lung deep penetration. Anything under 20 he got two holes.

Deer (even big deer) have dinky bodies compared to hogs.

If you hit him where your supposed to, you won’t have any issues at all. I’m a three blade user for years and I wouldn’t change no matter what poundage I was shooting. In my experience I just think you get more blood on the ground with a cut on contact three blade.

What Rick said.

“Lighter” bow than you. I found the arrow a few yards behind her in the ground. Woodsman 3-blade.

Another “light” bow, another 3-blade, more holes, etc...

Someone born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Upper Peninsula = UP UP = UPer, or Yooper.

Elk and a fat forky both with 200 grain VPA. complete pass throughs althought higher weight @ 58Lbs. YOU should have no issues with deer.I would drop to the VPSs 150s. I am sold on them.

Yes, 2 holes are good, but with a 3 blade, all you gotta do is run it into both lungs and it's "game over".

I should have mentioned I'm talking about deer size animals.

If you are drawing an honest 42#, no problem. And as far as arrow weight, 420 grains or more is all you need.

I had always wondered. Thanks.

If you do your job from sharpening to shot placement, at 42 pounds the VPA will do it’s job.

If your arrow is well tuned... you'll most likely still get two holes with that broadhead. I hunt (deer) with an identical set up... I'll come back here (to this thread) and we'll compare notes. 40# saluki turk… and I shoot 150g VPA's (3 blade). Jar

It has more to do with the shape of the tip....if it`s a cut on contact 3 blade it shouldn`t be an issue. Keep in mind the linear inches of wound channel.

Stick with the 175 grain head and get your total arrow mass up to 450 grain.

And of course good tune and sharp broadhead.
