So I hit the range today for a bit; pretty erratic, mostly. Some good shots and some that had me shaking my head.
Finished up with 9 shots at 70 yards; using my usual Dog’s Breakfast of mixed shafts. My group was centered a little low, but basically, had the bull been mounted 6” lower, I would have had 8/9 into the rings of a 65 cm target face; the one that I really dropped was within the width of the scoring rings, just in the dirt.
5 of the 9 were within the width of the 9-ring (smallest white scoring ring) - or is that the 8-ring?
That’s really good shooting for me... not sure how good it is by NFAA standards, but it makes me think that I should put a crowbar in my wallet, buy some good, matched arrows, and prove to myself that it wasn’t a fluke.
Any thoughts?

That sure sounds like good shooting to me and if you think that matched arrows will improve your shooting then it will. The mind is a powerful thing.

Not sure you could expect to do any better with Un-matched arrows, and yes I do think that a matched set will allow you to have a much more consistent grouping.

3 are full-length ( 1 5575 GT and 2 Beman 500s); cut to length are a 600 GT, a 500 Beman, 2 500 and 1 400 Black Eagle “Vintage” and an AD Trad Lite.

Yeahhhhh, I'd call that mismatched for sure.
Probably should get you a good set.

I think you did pretty darn good for a set of all over the place arrows. And yws a set of matched arrows , all eles being equal , should make you proud !! Good shooting, Mr.Griz

Matt, that is fine shooting for sure. Get them matched and it'll even be finer. Seventy yards is a long way and most here may have trouble seeing that far ... :)).

GF -
Not sure why I'm bothering, but I have to call BS on that.
Any decent sight shooter will tell you that a 40 - 50 grain weight difference in arrows will cause a 12 - 18" difference at 40 yards and be off the target frame at 70 (OK, 76 yards to be exact). At least from a recurve in the 190 fps range.
So, either there's something you're not telling us, or you just had a lucky end with a lot of compensating errors.
Viper out.

“So, either there's something you're not telling us, or you just had a lucky end with a lot of compensating errors.”
Well, I’m telling you the truth and I’m telling you all I really know. But when it comes to the Blind Hog factor..... I would be the LAST one to rule that out.
That’s why I figure I really need to stop screwing around when I’m just screwing around. Ordinarily, I really only concern myself with the lateral spread, just because of the mix of weights and lengths... With FP’s and big fletchings, I figure I’m still the primary issue.
FWIW, I did make some Kentucky Windage-type adjustments for elevation, but nothing scientific. Purely by feel, which should tickle the Instinctive guys, but I couldn’t promise to reproduce the method, let alone the result.
Question is, really.... what does a typical barebow group look like at that range?? Not from a 17.4 yard type, but I figured some of the old hands from the heyday of NFAA would have at least a frame of reference. For me, if I can get to where I can even keep 10/10 on the cardboard (regularly) at that range, I’ll be feeling pretty good about that....

So does this mean that I can say that Viper said my shooting was “unbelievably good”?

There are a lot of things you can do, and get away with. Even miss matched arrows.
That said - I'm not that good, so even when I shot wood arrows exclusively, I matched them up as close as I possibly could in weight & spine, which meant a lot of culling to get there.
I always kept them the same length. Even when I broke the tip off one, I would use aluminum to splice it back to the original length, and those spliced arrows were used for purposes other than target shooting.

if they are "tuned" to your bow and site picture at 20yds. they don't have to be matched unless you shoot farther imo

Not for that bow; I’ve busted them all up over the course of the summer. Easy to do when you’re willing to take shots where hitting the target is not guaranteed....
But you can get away with imperfect tuning when shooting generously fletched arrows with FPs, and you can learn to make modest adjustments for point weight at what most people would consider “normal” hunting range.
IMO....

BTW....
I made some trades to stock up on arrows for a new-to-me bow which now needs some repair... so I own plenty of matched arrows in pristine condition, but not for this bow or any of my other regular shooters. Think I have 4 dozen in 2117 and 2018, but running low on ammo for the lighter bows....
So just to leave no doubt, I am NOT planning to hunt this year because I need to settle in with matched arrows first.

And as a quick update… My shooting last weekend from the same distance left me feeling pretty certain that the Blind Hog factor was in full force on my previous outing… Should’ve bought a lottery ticket on my way home, I guess!
Not sure exactly what the difference was, but… Boy, was there a difference!

Some folks never shoot past 20 yards so they can disregard little nuances in arrow weight. When you're shooting 70...or 80 as in field round shooting, matched arrows are your friend. One of my best memories is a 4 for 20 pin I got on the 65 yard target...the one and only at that distance. Even lucking them in there is pretty satisfying. I still have the 20 pin somewhere in my mess.

LOL, Jon! I found an old Martin scale in the clubhouse, and found that I have a 150 grain weight range that I’m working with… 400 to 550.
So I must’ve had the little gods of Kentucky Windage on my side that day, I guess...
The irony is that the one that I dropped low was one of the 400 grainers....
