Finally got cold enough to wear my parka. I had a seamstress make me this out of Woolrich material, lined with thinsulate through the body and fleece in the hood. Has hand warmers. I'm wearing my Woolrich pants. All I need now is a buck to walk by. Had a bad week, infected tooth that I had to have a root canal. Went in yesterday for a CT scan and a MRI for my neck. I need a relaxing day in the woods.

Hang in there Will, you do need a break for sure. I have a good buddy who has had more issues with his neck and back than seems fair....about 14 operations over his lifetime so far. I'll keep you in my prayers for quick healing and that time in the woods. Love the wool.

Nice wool sir! Hope you get that relaxing day in the woods and the buck walking by would just be icing on the cake.

Nice jacket Will Tell.

Good luck with the tooth, and especially your hunt when you get to test that jacket.

My dentist, who is a golf friend, did a root canal last week. It can kinda sets you back some for sure. When I called my wife about the amount, she said "Can you win it back"? Told her no, but might have had a chance to fourty years ago. Can't climb trees any more now either.

A made to order insulated wool parka, doesn't get any better than that ! Now, if your tooth behaves it self so you can enjoy it! Best of luck, Ben

Beauty, watch out for burrs lol

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 01-Nov-19

I've set and pulled burrs from wool pants, it isn't all that bad and the wool is worth the effort and sure don't keep me from wearing the wool. I rarely get into the burrs when archery hunting for deer, now when rabbit hunting...it's another story. Keep a good lint roller around to help with that.

Yep Will, spending the day in our PA woods is the best medicine. Good luck!

To the top- I think it’s been said recently, but the WOOLRICH STORE in Woolrich, PA. is not doing too well. Almost nothing in there, at all. And what is in there is obviously very low quality. I’m not sure what’s going on in there. And the one employee that I was quizzing about it was very reluctant to entertain my queries. Woolrich as we know and love it may soon be no more.

From: woodsman
Date: 05-Dec-19

Sad but true. It went downhill years ago. Thank goodness there was enough of the stuff made that there shouldn't be a problem finding anything for years to come.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 05-Dec-19

Most of us got our first introduction to Woolrich from our dads and granddads, and then secondly in mags like Field and Stream, Outdoor Life and Sports Afield; their cover pages usually had the hunters in checked red and black wool. Those mags that still exist now show guys in modern camo wear, not checked wool, so the initial influence has also changed along with the general evolution of outdoor clothing.

Costs are not competitive either, even on Chinese made wool garments, and being competitive is what keeps you in business...especially when you're talking higher-end wool. Cap that with online sales that seem to be taking over...well, is taking over sales. Few folks, are looking for domestic wool shirts, vests and pants for over a hundred bucks a pop. Synthetics are cheaper and better advertised nowadays, and then there is that infamous "wool makes me itch" thing.

Woolrich, Pa., is also off the beaten path, so to speak between Loch Haven and Jersey Shore (Jersey Shore, Pa.) and US Route 220 is no longer the main north/south highway it was back in the 50's and 60's. I'm surprised they are still in operation since most of the old guard who loved their woolrich have grown old and many gone on to another life.

From: DanaC
Date: 05-Dec-19

Hehehe, yeah, I've gotten some good woolies off ebay but there are idiots out there who will toss a wool shirt in the hot water wash and then the dryer!

On the other hand my skinny friends sometimes get a nice sweater that used to be an XL ;-)

I've generally found that Woolrich shirts are less likely to be shrunk than Pendletons. Go figure.

From: Wudstix Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Have to be on the lookout for a couple shirts.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 05-Dec-19

If you buy from Ebay, most sellers, if asked will measure the sleeve length and measure across the back and from neck to tail. I've done that several times before buying there. I've had great luck on Ebay, including a heavy wool sweater made in Scotland for less than $20.00 including shipping.

As for outsourcing, how many American made cell phones can you buy? Everybody outsources nowadays and no one gives it a thought if it's something they think they just have to own. That started, by they way, right after World War II.

Had my Woolrich on yesterday. Love the stuff. You would think that changing with the times would have helped. Maybe camo wool or base layers? Their name alone would sell the stuff.

From: George D. Stout

Woolrich did make a camo pattern. I have one of their camo shirts in my mess somewhere. Keeping up with all the others like Columbia, and Land's End, etc., costs a lot of advertising money and I guess they just don't want to go that route.

Does anyone know if Johnson Wool in Johnson, Vermont is still in business? I bought a nice plaid wool jacket from them about 25 years ago and have been quite satisfied with it.

I have woolrich wool shirt ,paints, hat, and vest there about 30 or40 years old ,they are camouflage.

From: hawkeye in PA

I also have one of the Woolrich camo pants and matching jacket. Unfortunatley it no longer fits:( Sure hunted in it alot. Been saving it for the grandsons, but so far the oldest two wouldn't wear it (out of style I guess), one grandson to go.

Had a 5 pt buck feeding on acorns as I sat at the bottom of the oak tree this year. He fed for a good ten minutes sometimes as close as thirty feet while I had my brown plaid woolrich shirt on. He wouldn't have fed that long had he had a few more points. (wasn't legal yet)

WalnutBill,

Johnson Woolen Mills is still up there in Johnson VT. I was at my cabin about a hour northeast of there for a week of rifle season last month and they were sponsoring calls by a radio station to various checking stations reporting the action. Something you'd never hear on the airways in most areas. Like going back in time when up there. Between my son and I we have two coats, two backpacks and a fannypack from them.

From: Smokedinpa
Date: 06-Dec-19

Krag their coats are so warm. I take mine off to walk in so I don’t sweat. Then once I put that thing on I don’t get cold. If I do, I head home because its dam cold.

From: WalnutBill
Date: 07-Dec-19

Thanks for the info, Krag. I recall my visit with them, and as you say, it was like stepping back in time. It seemed to be a relatively small company with an emphasis on quality. I'd love to revisit them someday, but Tennessee is a long way from Vermont.

I have a few Woolrich Pa garments. Most notable among them is my dad's mackinaw coat. It is somewhere in the house here. The others are a parka with a hood like the poster shows, well similar anyways and a couple of the unlined zip up plaid jackets. I had there red plaid coat forever but gave it away. All USA made too. keepem sharp

I wasn't aware that the Woolrich mill in PA is now closed. What a shame. I couldn't find the wool pants on their site. Did they do away with those altogher?

From: longbow1

Found my fathers' old mackinaw Woolrich. Charcol gray/black with light pin stripes down it(gray/red) and a brown blanket type liner. Just gave it to my youngest when he came over for dinner cause it didn't fit me anymore. He loves it and fits him just like it did my father. keepem sharp

I am close enough to the town of Woolrich to be able to get seconds and closeouts. Had piles of all kinds of wool hunting clothing. Still do. It was actually foreign made for a long time. A really stupid business model when your market is deer hunters. They would have been better to exploit the fact that is was US made and charge double. I got a nice office shirt there the last time I went in. But the hunting gear isn't there. But since Kuiu and Firstlite synthetics and lightweight merino, I'm not about to wear that heavy Woolrich. Except for cutting firewood and plowing snow so I don't get my Kuiu hogged up. Plus Woolrich style wool can't be washed after every sweaty mountain hike. No wonder deer used to be on full alert when they got near. I must have smelled like a sasquatch. Which might be ok for rifle hunting, what Woolrich was made for. Still hunting with a rifle. It was not made for long treestand sits! Tedd

Krag, WalnutBill, I second the Johnson Woolen Mills!! I have a number of there shirt jacks, shirts and items. Top quality and service. I also have 3 of there new line, Johnson Flannel shirts. Absolutely the best flannel shirts I have owned. NO shrinkage and are tough. Silvrtip

What a great coat Will. Fantastic you had a fun day after those medical situations, especially the root canal.

Went to WW (weight watchers) two weeks ago and had lost over six pounds. When asked what worked for me that week, told them I had an emergency tooth extraction. A great way to lose weight. Gained a pound the next.
