Mounted my first flint arrow head. Gave it the spin test and all looks good. How do you mount your flint arrow heads. How about some tips.

I make sure the base to the point is as thin as I can get it. After cutting and fitting the point to the groove cut in the end of the arrow I use two drops of Loctite Ultra gel super glue on each side of the base of the point and fit it to the arrow. You will have about a minute to fit the point making sure it is straight all the way around.

I then mix up some epoxy and put one drop of India ink in the epoxy to make it black. I use one of those cheap kids paint brushes to apply the epoxy to the arrow and head trying to fill in all the gaps.

I use fake sinew to wrap the point and then after the point is wrapped I use the liquid super glue and brush it on with one of those cheap brushes. I post a photo on what I use.

A little shorter then a Bear Razor head. But about the same width. But weighs a few grains lighter then the Bear head.

Thanks for the input Jon. I used real deer sinew from the back of a doe I shot. But I too used a Gorilla glue to fix the head to the shaft first. After I made sure it was spinning true.

The things I use. I did find un waxed dental floss that I am going to dye with black walnuts and try and use it. I don't like the wax on the fake sinew.

The paint brush is a good idea I over looked. I used a tooth pick to spread on the glue. I'm looking forward to shooting this arrow. Just to see how it flies. What do you guys shoot your stone heads into when practicing?

Well I can see one mistake I made after looking at your mounted head Jon. I didn't make my slot deep enough. Beautiful point and mounting job you done there Jon. Thanks for sharing that.

This is the real deer sinew I used and glue. I'm thinking about grying to make some pine pitch glue.

Is that a Cedar shaft Jon?

I use a gizmo called a nifty nocker to cut the grooves in the arrow. I use the long groove and then glue the small piece of wood into the groove and then file the small grove in to the footed arrow.

When mounting heads I just file the long groove in the point end and then sand to fit the point.

I also like to use footed shafts when I hunt with stone

I have never shot a footed shaft Jon. I know they are a little heavier and stronger on the point end. Which would be a plus for a hunting shaft. You make a real good looking arrow Jon. How much do your heads weigh?

From: Jon Stewart
Date: 15-Sep-19

Thanks for the kind words. I have never weighed my points but my deer are 10 yards and closer when I shoot . Not much room for the arrow dropping but I know they are pretty close to 125 grns.

The bottom arrow with the multi colored point is a Flintridge material and that is my carp shooting arrow. I took one fish with that arrow so far.

I use mostly cedar shafts but the footing is black walnut or mesquite.

Wow Shooting Carp with a flint tip! Pretty cool Jon.

Next knapped head I mount . I will cut my groove a little deeper. Like just above the notches. Thanks again for all the advice Jon.

Very nice work.

I haft to try very hard to do a snug and tidy job.

The flint from Flint Ridge is instantly recognizable. I quarried about 100 pounds from there. Back when it was privately owned and quarrying flint was on the honor system.

I use a tile blade on a hacksaw and keep the arrow in a vise, wrapped in cloth and held lightly. It works so fast and easy. Once I get the depth I use small files to get it setting perfectly. Last year I used JB Weld and sinew. This year I’m using hotmelt and sinew. I want the arrow to come above the notches

Jeff is great at it. He sent me one that spins true!

tonto59~ they look good...the only thing I do different is that I prefer the tapered in of the shaft to extend past the notches, so that I catch it under the sinew when wrapping the notch...like most of the others in this thread. It just seems to me that it would be a stronger attachment that way. Have fun.

Pine tar pitch and artificial sinu, on these two. JF

Jon where did you get those nifty nocker things?

From: Jon Stewart
Date: 17-Sep-19

They were used and I got them off of tradgang a few years ago. They really take the guess work out of a straight cut on the end of the arrow. They come with 3 fittings, 5/16, 11/32 and 23/64ths. That the arrow goes into and that fitting screws into the bottom of the aluminum holder. Put it out there on the trade thread and maybe someone has a set laying around.

i use pine pitch as the adhesive on mine

Thanks Jon. Never heard of that tool. Who wouldn't want a set of nifty "KNOCKERS" Is that pine pitch as strong as epoxy?

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 18-Sep-19

Pine pitch is not as strong as epoxy. Smells great when applying though. JF

Raptor Archery sells the nifty nocker and there is a video demonstration as well. I suppose others do as well.

Date: 18-Sep-19

I checked out Raptors web site and viewed the video. The one he is using in the video is the one I have. There is a different one shown on the page for sale tho.
