I just acquired a nice 1961 Howatt Ventura for my wife that has this round stick-on foil decal on the upper limb. It says "Windy City", "Bowmen" "Chicago" in the three lines of print. The bow came to me from Southern Illinois. I'm guessing Windy City Bowmen was a local club in the greater Chicago area but I've never heard of that club. The only google search hit was an Australian ebay listing of an old Bear-style tape-on bowfishing reel with the same, but larger, round decal on it. Anybody know anything about the Windy City Bowmen?

It might be a predecessor to Chicago Bowhunters Club. I think they have a web site.

From what I can remember from the 60s..They were a club that was located at a archery shop with a 20yd. range on the 2nd floor. It was on Armitage ave just east of Kedzie on Chi.N/W side. The shop was owned by Van Graham. He later moved to I believe North ave and Harlem.until he sold the shop. I believe the person he sold to is still in busness ner Richmond,IL. Windy City would do a lot of park dist. shooting around Chi as all the parks had archery ranges.

Thanks for the info. I remember thse 20 yard max indoor range at Mudjaw Bowmen in Toledo. Indoor league was especially popular from January through April.

Not Chicago Bowhunters. CBH was started in Oak Brook and then later moved to Bolingbrook.

Woods Walker's CBH history is correct. No relation to Windy City Bowmen.

There is an outfit located in an old barn outside of Richmond, Illinois called Midwest Cimarron. They might have some info for you.

One of my fellow CBH members was a member of Windy City Bowmen. Here's what he emailed to me:

"The Windy City Bowmen was an archery club sponsored by the Chicago Archery Center, a commercial archery store located in Chicago on Armitage near Kedzie. The owner Van Graham was a CBH member for awhile. In fact he brought several bus loads of shooters out to our (CBH) first 3D Swamp Shoot in 1963 this was a one day event at that time and attracted. according to the May 1964 Bow Banter, 589 shooters, not all from WCB of course. WCB was pretty active in putting together hunting trips for they're members and guests. They also would hold indoor archery leagues."

Not to hijack "mangonboat`s" thread but it`s along the same Chicago history line.

I bought a couple of long bows from an older gentleman, he said they were his fathers and he remembers him having these in the early 60`s.

The one that interests me is a wooden self bow that was made for the old "VL&A" at 9 N.Wabash. The only info on the bow is the "VL&A Best in Sports" sticker and "70lbs" on the limb. This bow is a dark walnut color 64" with a mother of pearl arrow rest insert. It`s in pristine condition. Any info who would of made the bow or any history.

I would love to shoot it but am afraid to string it.

Dave, if that member is Mike & Sue F. or George Frost say high from Bob Turner. I also was a member back on the 60s. Thanks BT.
