Does anyone hunt near here? I live in NC but my parents recently moved to that area and I’m impressed with the amount of public land nearby. My family doesn’t hunt so I’m on my own looking for spots. I bit the bullet and purchased the $350+ out of state license so I’ve made a commitment to check it out! I’m not looking for anyone’s honey holes but if someone could point me in a general direction to start looking for deer and/or hogs I’d really appreciate it. I’m looking forward to exploring some new ground with my longbows. Happy hunting. mg

Contact the South Carolina D.N.R. Regional Office for your area and ask for contact info on the wildlife biologist in your area. I've never talked to a wildlife or fisheries biologist who was not willing to help.

I don’t hunt near McCormick but supposed to be a lot of deer and hogs in that area. Good luck though.

Ive hunted there a little.I quit I wasnt seeing many deer.I read in a sc hunting brochure that coyottes eat half the fawns. That and over hunting I think has depleted the heard.I read where 6 million pounds of venison was donated in sc.I was talking to a local he said him and his wife used to go spoting and see hundreds of deer and now 10s or less.Just my take.

I've hunted there my whole life, but I haven't deer hunted there in a few years now. I've mainly hunted on private land near the McCormick/Abbeville county line off of Hwy 28, but I do know off some spots on public land. I'll PM you some spots I'm familiar with tomorrow.

If there is game there, it will let sign, ie, droppings, spoor, evidence of eating areas...digging, etc. Just find a spot that looks good and walk it. Hunt from the ground and you will learn more about that area in a week or so than you could learn in a year just tree stand sitting. One of the biggest joys of hunting to is seeing what a new place has to offer and walking it to find as many answers as it will give up.

I hunt in Edgefield County. Which is ajacent to McCormick. Hogs are moving in on the river and steam systems in our area. Coyotes are active but the deer are adjusting. Locate oak ridges and food and you will find the deer.

Our deer are not large and like thick areas.

Good luck.

Game may very well LET sign, but they will LEAVE it also. I’ve hunted private land SC with my cousin in the past. Very close to where you’re going. It will be hot in September and October. Early on, look for persimmon trees and scuplins. Grapes, scuppernongs, whatever you’d like to call them. And honeysuckle. Later on acorns start to fall. Walk until you see a place with a lot of dung on the ground. Figure out what the attraction is. Hunt accordingly. be in possesion of a thermacell.

Thanks for the input guys. And I especially want to thank Lowcountry for sharing a lot of detailed information based on his experience of the area! Happy hunting and good luck to everyone this season.
