In the last 55 years I've been hunting I've experimented with everything from boots, camo, tree stands, deer calls, bows, arrows, broadheads, hats, gloves, scent control, etc. etc. etc.

I've hunted with longbows, recurves, compounds, shooting light draw bows to heavy draw bows. I've used Carbon arrows, wood and aluminum. I couldn't tell you how many broadheads I've tried, too many to remember. I even have some stone heads mounted on a few arrows.

I've used climbing stands, ladder stands and hanging stands. Tree steps and tree ladders, even strap on steps. I've hunted real high and real low. I've hunted from the ground and out of blinds.

I've used about every kind of camo to no camo at all. I've used cover scents, deer urine, fox urine, coon urine and even stepped in cow dung to cover my scent.

I've owned more pairs of boots than I could count. Leather, rubber, insulated and non insulated. Light weight socks to heavy wool socks. Heavy wool underwear to light weight cotton longjohns.

I've tried all kinds of deer calls, bleats, wheezing, grunts, even the Doe in a can. I've used my mouth to call in bucks by bleating and have even had Doe come in close by just talking real quiet to them.

So after experimenting for over 55 years what have I come up with. I hunt off a stool and usually carry a self bow with three wood arrows. I use old Bear heads or Zwickeys and stone heads. Usually I'm hunting with no camo and a light insulated boot with light socks. I buy most of my hunting clothes from Tractor Supply. I carry a bottle of water, knife, compass and dragging rope. No cover scents or deer calls. I do wear camo bibs in the winter because they're the warmest I could find.

One thing I always do is to cover my face and hands while hunting. All of the above equipment worked by the way, some of it better than others.

I think alot of use went through a similar experience over the years, but not everyone ends up the same. I'm pretty much right there with you except my favorite outlet for clothes is the local Goodwill. I do like Tractor Supply though, some of the friendliest folks you could ever find.

Great, except you need four arrows.

Cuz maybe you'll need a second one to actually hit the bobcat that sneaks in just before the coyote that really needs shooting does too, and maybe you'll still need to hold onto your fourth arrow and pass on the other coyote cuz its only 7:15 on opening day.

Its happened before... :-)

Good post, Will. I've done all that the same as you and have whittled my gear down to match your list. I still hunt out of tree stands mostly because of where I hunt. My two favorite hunting shirts came from TSC and my favorite pants are dark green cargo pants from Duluth. Once I get to the point where I truly don't care if I put one in the freezer, I'll probably sit on a stool the same as you. Tree stands ease a lot of problems for me and where I hunt.

Yep, I came full circle too. Started with very little. Carried and tried many things. Now I am down to just a few. Some days if it wasn’t for the bow in my hand you wouldn’t know I was hunting. :) A thermos and apple pop tarts are the only must.

Nice post.

Thanks for the 55 year summary. A wise hunter will realize that they can not buy experience.

I just turned 65 this summer and your post sounds like something I could have written... Now that I hunt within walking distance of the house, my 3 arrows include a field point, a judo, and a broadhead. If I need another arrow I can just walk back to the shop and get one. ...life is just good. :)

Will, after my having spent 67 years hunting with the Bow, I came to the same conclusion as you did a many moons ago. It's a lot of fun going out with the " Bare Essentials " and still be successful. Good luck to you in the upcoming season.

I kind of went through that phase as well. But when I started to reach for a back pack for a day hunt realization hit me.

You should see Barry Wensel's comment about being on the ground vs 3 feet off the ground. Maybe it was 4. Made sense to me.

Mine is about that sparse as well. I do carry some basic survival gear all the time thought. I hunted all last season with 2 broadheads and a judo.
