2 to 3 months if your chest was split. Dr. told me he gave me the archers cut whatever that meant he didn't elaborate.

Took little while to build back strength for me when had heart value.

Mooooooooooooooooo

I've been in your situation, I can't remember how long it was till I was shooting again but you should take it easy and let your chest heal. they told me that when they crack your chest open it's the same trauma as getting hit by a car boing 30 MPH. Like they said above your Cardiologist will let you know when you can start shooting.

I had by-pass surgery in 2009, ten years ago next week. I was given a notebook with instructions, DO as the doctors tell you. Each of use heal a little bit different, but DO as the doctors tell you.

If I remember correctly, I could start doing my normal stuff at 12 weeks, though you will start others things as per your doctor and physical therapist over that 12 weeks.

I was able to start hunting again in late November with a 40 lb. bow.

Take it easy and don't reinjury yourself . . . did I mention, DO as your doctor tells you> :)

Hope all goes well with you . . . Michael

Gerald, listen to your cardiologist. Many here may have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, but I don't think I would take much of their advice over a professional...especially a professional that knows you and your body.

Had mine six years ago, listen to your physician. I healed quickly and was shooting in about two months but everyone is different.

The most important thing is to remember, " Every day is a gift ". Best wishes.

I had CABG X4 June 25. Feel pretty good now, but medicos won't let me drive yet. No bows, chainsaws or big guns till late September.

I think I could pull a bow now without putting tension on the sternum, but I will wait til doctor says OK. Just not worth the small risk of HUGE damage.

Sounds like a good time to make some arrows, Sharpen broad heads, Organize your hunting stuff. Make a new bow string. Start looking for a light weight bow on the used bow sites. Like raptor Archery, Footed shaft, RMSG, Big Jims, And so on. Sounds like you have the mental part already licked. Good luck Gerald!

I have a valve job in my future. Not soon says Doc but it’s the big one. Says they will go up through my groin. I have started a plan to lose a pound a week and exercise as much as I can. I learned with my hip replacement the better shape your in going in the shorter rehab and restriction period. This Doc agreed when I told him my plan. Since he kept my Father-in-law alive for 35+ years after he should have died I will listen to him. Now is good time to lay in arrow making stuff, learn feather splicing, make a new quiver or three. That month or so I couldn’t go to the range made me stir crazy. Hobbies help. TV sucks

Well here is something to think about. My friend had bypass chest split 20 years a go or more and decided to shoot his bow too soon. Pulled his sternum and to this day he still has trouble with it.

Just great to hear your doing well!

I had the bypass Jan 31st, started rehab 2 weeks later and as soon as they took the weight restrictions off they let me start pulling a 35# bow. The rehab people contacted my cardio DR. before they gave me the go ahead. I'm back to shooting 55-56# now. Keep up your rehab and you'll be fine. I second the good wife thing!
