When bare shaft tuning ,

Would you prefer a slightly weak, stiff or “perfect” flight.

I have heard arguments for all of them.

I have always leaned to the slightly weak, thinking that when I add feathers it would stiffen the spine and straighten up any weak flight. Plus the weak shaft would give a little better clearance of the shelf.

But I have been told by some they prefer a slightly stiff bare shaft reading

I am in the process of tuning some 2117 for my S/K.

These were used so the longest usable length for me is bare shafting slightly stiff. I was able to get an extra 3/8” on a couple and they read perfect

I can adjust point weight accordingly but I was just curious what y’all look for when you bare shaft tune.

You are talking about tuning based on nock kick. Which is by the way least reliable indicator of proper tuning for the majority of archers. Reason being that the reading is heavily influenced by release, the target medium and so on.

My preference is for the bare and fletched shafts to impact together on a vertical line that I'm shooting at.

In GENERAL, a slightly weak arrow is easier to tune, but a slightly stiff arrow (after tuning) will usually shoot better. Note the word SLIGHTLY.

I prefer a slightly weak arrow also, one that is slightly weak with the broadhead of choice. I find that a slightly weak arrow is a little more forgiving if my release is a tad off. I find a stiffer arrow is not quite as forgiving.

Personally when tuning bare shafts , I shoot them for a long time before making any conclusions, once I feel like I am in the vain so to speak, I began shooting them with fletched shafts and move on from there.

I am going to fletch a couple of these up and see how it goes, I have never fletched a Bare shaft that read stiff, as I have always looked for a slightly weak bare shaft.

So if I add point weight to the front of the artow it weakens the spine. But if I add it to the back it makes it stiffer. ? How does the arrow know what the front and the back is? Lol

Just like a cup keeping hot coffee hot to cold drinks cold.. Have no idea how it knows. I like to tune for perfect bare shaft flight, then reduce the insert weight just a touch. And my Van Dieman's fly perfect on shafts, as well was big three bladed heads. I just have to figure out what heads I like best.

If I take a car on arrow tube and put a point on it Id say it's the same no matter which way i point the tip

How does the arrow know? It has to move the front, whereas the rear just follows.
