Anybody wear a vest as their outermost layer instead of a jacket in cold weather?

I do. I have an old wool vest that has nice pockets on it. Works good for me.

Define 'cold weather'. I tried the vest-on-top thing ages ago and it's fine for temps in the 40's, with enough shirts below. Below that I want a jacket.

I always wear a vest all winter and got to where i cant stand a coat. Now this is for temps down to 30 or so. I have it layered underneath as needed. A sweater and insulated flannel with the vest on top work well for me in 30 degrees. At 40 deg i skip sweater for a thick long sleeve up to about 50. After 50 its a thick flannel and vest and so on.

I wear two different ones, a Sitka Kelvin vest when its REALLY cold and a Filson wool vest when its just cold-ish. My temps will vary from others "cold" due to my internal thermostat being broken.

I mostly wear sweaters under a heavy wool shirt. I rarely wear a coat....only if there is a wind chill about. I have a couple vests but mostly wear them under a shirt as part of layering to keep my core warm. I don't sit in tree stands in cold weather so I don't need heater suits.

Yes, but we're not talking single digit temps. Blousy insulate jacket sleeves were never conducive to good accuaracy for me, even with extra long armguards.

I have several. Like Riverwolf said, best thing going for a bowhunter. Wool, Berber fleece, leather...and I will be making a one out of bison leather stitched to a military wool blanket and another with deerskin as a windproof liner with a brown/grey herringbone wool outer.
Actually, now that I think about it, I have at least a dozen vests. I wear them all season.

I wear my Asbell wool vest as soon as the temps dictate it. Love it. Its in the Timberghost pattern and is teriffic camo. Blends in better than marketed camo.

Like the comments above, with a wool vest on in the winter and a full length arm guard from wrist to shoulder, I haven’t hit the string yet while hunting late season mule deer or rabbits.

Cold weather in Alberta requires your arms to be warm as well. I wear a vest in what is regarded as cold weather in many places, but is just cool weather here. Of course I have also been known to wear shorts all winter.

I hope I still have my 1980's Bob Fratzke/Winona fleece lined knitted vest. I just love it, but The Mrs. keeps trying to steal it!

Firechief that's hilarious , I once was in a goodwill store looking for cheap fleece vests and spied a winona fleece sweater hanging in with the womens sweaters . I got it for $2.50 and ' I still have it . At the time they were selling for well over $100 . Now back to the subject . In cool weather I use goowill fleece vests as base layers and in cold weather I use wool sweaters as base with an old "king of the mountain " beavertail vest that is the warmest piece of clothing I own . I can't even wear it in temps. above 20 deg.

A vest is all you need... right up to the point where it isn’t!!
As mentioned above, a vest adds warmth where you need it without bulking up your arms to where it interferes with your shot. I’ve almost always got one on, but if I’m parked in a tree, it’s just part of the layering system.

I wear a fleece lined Carhartt vest as my outer layer a lot in colder temps, and whichever wool sweater, and the right underlayers, to suit the weather. Seldom, if ever, wear a jacket hunting or roving. I'm out year round, and temps in single numbers or teens is common in the winter months up here. Hand/body warmers in the vest pocket. Always able to stay warm enough, and I'm a skinny guy that gets cold easily!

Wool vest for me, with Pendleton wool shirt and sweat moving inner layer. Works great in Texas and Oklahoma. Really cold/windy days I will include my Asbell windbreaker vest. If that doesn't keep me warm its two cold for me to be out there.
