A friend was recently gifted a rawhide backed, #35 pound yew, horn nocked english longbow. It has a mother of pearl arrow strike plate and an uppercase G inscribed in a circle above the handle as if put there buy a branding iron. The person that gave it to her said that it was something of a collectors item and that he was pretty sure it was made by the guy that made bows for Fred Bear. Does anyone have knowledge of any logo that Nels Grumley used before he started working for Bear? She wants to shoot this thing and I am trying to get some info before she strings it.
Thanks, Bill

If it is that old, I would not shoot it. Grumley? Maybe. Might be Groves, too. There is lots of misinformation out there coming from folks that know little or nothing about bows. I had a friend tell me for two years that his grandson was shooting a Bear. The kid needed a new string so I went to get the bow. It was an old beat up kit bow. I think Bear being the most recognizable name causes some of the problem. Sort of like all sodas being called Coke in this part of the world.

Like BATMAN said, “can you post a pic?” I worked with a guy that told me he had some recurves at his house. I asked to see them. When he finally brought them to work, they were red, Shakespeare fiberglass bows, all three the most basic, with white molded handles, under 20#.

George is correct that is an Earl Grubbs. Nice bow, don't even string it, if you want it in one piece.
