Been awhile since I've been on or shot my bow. Picked it up to shoot the other day and the string is slapping my bow hand, just back of the thumb, OUCH! What is going on? Never had this happen before.

Sounds like "Low Brace Height" or "Tight Nocks" or?..."Both"

if it is hitting near your thumb, your brace is far too low, depending on the type of bow, a brace that low could damage the bow. Check the brace now!

Low brace...very low!

Low brace height, tight nocks, or your turning your bowhand inside the string. Could be any of the 3.

Flemmish string ? They will unwind some if the ends aren't secure. Twist them to shorten.Pay attention which direction though. You will feel tension building in it.

Could I possibly put the string on upside down?

String is the same length no matter how you put it on the bow. As mentioned your brace is too low.

If it is a flemish string and it has not been on a bow or hanging, it probably untwisted itself. Sure you can put a string on up side down, but the nocking point will be way off.

OK, not to beat a dead horse, what is the brace and how do I raise it? Nothing had changed(?) since I shot it last, so I don't quite get it. Thanks for alls' help.

String the bow. Measure from the string to the deepest part of the grip. That is your brace height. You don't give us any information about the bow and that is important. My rule of thumb for starters: long bow 6 1/4" recurve bow 7 1/2" Then adjust the string length until the bow is as quiet as it will get. Lots of video and archery suppliers online for a reference.

"Nothing had changed(?) since I shot it last," That's why you want to check your hand placement/grip before you change anything. There are more tuning/shooting issues related to user error than to equipment error.
