any one use fast flight on a self bow ? I put a couple layers of phenolic on the tips and haven't had any problems. just wondering if anyone else does this.

I have for years.

Yep all the time, no problems. Pappy

Me too. No problem Bjrogg

B 50 for me. I don't even own a spool of the stuff.

Me too with the fast flight

I put D-97 on all of my selfbows just this summer - seems to work great!

My Brad Smith osage selfbow came with a low stretch string. Nothing but the osage for tips...no overlays. About eleven years ago Dave Mimms sent me a self hickory bow and it came with a low stretch string. They've been doing it for years now. The sky has not fallen.

Yep. 8 strand. Some use 6 strand.

From: Arvin

8 strand D97 with 10 in the loops and serving. Jon you try D97 and the B50 will be given away! I argued with Rick Barby for a year only to publicly acknowledge the fact tha he was right about the stretch and noise. Won't ever go back. Arvin

Been using some form of fast flight (D97 now) on my Osage selfbow for 15 years or so.

No tip overlays, no issues.

I was scared to string my self bow for days. Arvin made it for me. He just laughed and said he didn't build them to look at and Osage was tough. It is still going strong and shows no sign of wear. >>>>-----> Ken

I have it on my Hickory selfbow 10 strand 2 bundle double served BCY-X

I have no reinforcement on my tips, just a hickory wood bow. No problems and a considerable improvement with the speed.

Pearl Drums put me on to this, won't use anything else unless they quit making it.

They quit making BCY X.

Yes , with bone tip over lays.

No overlays, no problems.

If yer bow is shocky, try a no-stretch string. I can't balance limbs well enough to ever NOT use it.

From: Bentstick54

I use D97 on all my Osage selfbows. No reinforced tips, Thousandsof shots over 9 years and no issues.

From: Weylin

No overlays, no problem. Many people have been doing it for many years without issue. That myth's been busted in the selfbow world.

From: PEARL DRUMS

The best part about using low stretch string material is longevity. One string will last "forever". Plus, its cheaper per string than B50. I'd say that's a win-win.

If low stretch strings had become available in the 1960's, Bear, Wing, and Pearson would have been racing to be the first manufacturer to use it on their bows. Those guys were innovators first and they would have seen to it that tests were done quickly to prove or disprove. R&D was the order of the day, not looking for answers on a forum, which luckily didn't exist back then as instantaneous expertise.

If low stretch strings don't cut through self bows how can they cut through fiberglass on laminated bows, hmm makes you wonder.

From: RonG
Date: 12-Jul-19

well it figures they would quit making a perfect string material.

If BCY-X works on a selfbow wouldn't you think D97 would work also, tell me why are they not interchangeable if they are almost the same.... non stretch or very little.

From: SteveBNY

Ron - They quit making it because the primary material - SK90 - got replaced by a higher grade of Dyneema - SK99.

Replaced it with X99.

I'm thinking self bows have more mass and less vibration than recurves and longbows. I always check my tips on my self bows and no wear from the fast flight strings.

Hickory self bow, no tip overlays, about 10 years, FF no problem.

From: RonG
Date: 12-Jul-19

Steve, thanks for that info, I haven't ordered a string in a while.

From: Tlhbow

I've only used D-97 on my selfbows but picked up a couple spools of x99 over the weekend. Anyone used it on self bow or have a opinion on using it. Really like it on a longbows.

What's the difference between the old fast flight and the fast flight plus? I currently have a spool of fast flight in black. Would it be a problem to buy a contrasting color in the fast flight plus and use them together to make a two color Flemish twist string?

From: 4nolz@work

Yes on low-stretch

People hang on to things that aren't viable anymore, and most of the low stretch hype has been debunked for years now. I shoot a Fury string, 15 strands in the body and 24 in the loops on a 1966 Black Hawk Scorpion that has no overlays. Read that no overlays. I have hundreds of arrows through that bow over two years now, and was using it today for a little hunt/rove with my buddy Scott. If you want to believe that low stretch will damage a bow, then have at it. I stopped believing that ten plus years ago and haven't had a failure yet on my old bows.

I use 12 strands of D-97 and .025 zebra serving on all my selfbows, we are talking 150+ selfbows that went out the door, no problems. I use this strand/serving combination because it is a perfect fit for a Bohning classic nock that I always use. I use to pad the loops with 4 strands of B-50 but don't go to the trouble anymore. I also put tip overlays on all my bows but mainly for looks, not to accommodate a fast flight string.
