Hey all.

I need some suggestions.

My bow target is a square block that’s 3 feet x 3 feet x 1 1/2 feet thick. In the past when I go to move the blocks around to make sure certain ones aren’t getting all the hits, I would replace the covering I use for it. What I have been using is a couple burlap feed bags I buy from the local feed store. I think they’re $2.50 each and I need 2. The problem is that they don’t last long. A few good rain spells followed by the Texas HEAT just about does them in.

I need to reposition the blocks now and I need a covering. I thought I’d ask you guys if you have any suggestions on what I could use in place of the cheap burlap I have been using.

I know there’s a place that sells high quality target faces in 3’x3’ and 4’x4’ and they come with instructions on building a really nice target. I’ve thought about building it but they recommend filling it with old clothes. I found a guy online that talked about building one and he done the 4 foot square one and it took almost 100 pounds of old clothes to fill it!! He’s a wheel bow guy. He said his local Goodwill sells clothes by the pound, but none around me do this. Even if I were to find one that did, if they charged the same price that the one where he got all of his at did, just the price of clothes would be well over $70 just by itself. The target would end up costing about $125 to build. The target faces alone are $38 and more for the 4 foot mode.

So that’s too much.

I have also thought about buying a couple of thefoam block targetson sale and attaching them together to try and get one as big as the one I have now is. I haven’t found any on sale though.

So, if you have any idea for an inexpensive but good covering I can use, please let me know. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and help.

Hey Larry, check out Morrell Targets. They sell bag targets in all shapes and sizes. They also sell replacement polypropne target bag covers for their targets. I'm sure you could find a size and adapt it to your exact size.

If you live in a farming area, you might find some of the large heavy bags that seeds are sold in. The material is similar to the Morrell target bags but considerably heavier.

Yes, feed bags are what I use all the time. The ones I get even have little farm animals on them, LOL. Makes for a really small behind the shoulder shot.

Larry, I cover the bag targets on my range with plain old contractor size garbage bags. Keeps the rain and sun off of them and they last a long time.

Morell target faces are tough, long lasting, come in a variety of designs

I bought a bow of 1450 denier heavy duty sandbags and cut them open to fit the target. Cost about $.75 apiece and contact cement them to the target. They last a good while and take about 30 minutes to replace when needed.

Might try 50lb plastic seed bags for covers. They are typically those plastic web type bags and the holes are small enough to hold small seed like perennial ryegrass. Similar material as those commercial bag targets.

Seems like they have been around since I worked for the Soil and Crop Science Dept at Texas A&M in College Station during the seventies, and they use the same bags now. They held up in that Texas heat real good. Might check with a local coop or call a seed company. There are many who specialize in shipping turfgrasses out of Oregon and can be found on the web.

I don't have a target face yet- I'm still working on my poker face:) OK- The fellers at the local produce store kept all the plastic pallet wrap for me for two weeks- enough to fill a one ton bulker bag- and I mean packed tight. I was also given a massive roll of shade cloth that a mate of mine bought to cover his garden with and then changed his mind. So I've been making bags from shade cloth and stuffing them with plastic. I also have woven plastic feed bags stuffed with many more of the same bags- work well and weigh nothing so it's easy to chuck them back in the shed. Can't leave them outside as they break down real quick in sunlight. I also asked the missus to hold wooden spoons up near her head and run around the yard making noises like a deer. Didn't get the response I'd hoped for- She can be very rude sometimes) JayInOz

You may want to try what I call ground cover but which many call weed barrier. You can get it pretty heavy. It can be stitched with nails around an old target. Buying "ready made" is much easier though.
