They respond well to heat during the straightening process, and yes they stay straight better than wood.

Heat gently and bend into shape one node at a time. A hair dryer will heat the area enough, or over a stove on low heat. Don't get it too close. Put one end of the shaft on a hard surface and angle the shaft up a bit and hold the other end in your other hand. Use the palm of your hand to rub the high area straight. Most will stay after one bending/cooling, but sometimes an additional treatment is necessary.

I've actually tightly bound them to a steel rod, then heated them while bound, and had very good luck getting initial straightness in them.
Then, it's just a matter of working out the little spots if there are any.
Heat gun, or good hair dryer work just fine for the job.
