I am not going to go into the full story, but right now there is a perfect storm of Warthogs on ebay. The Howatt/ Martin Warthog was a 1970's bow designed to be a riser that could be used with recurve limbs and compound limbs and cables. The limb alignment and pivot was a pair of ball bearings. I have always been intrigued by that concept. Right now on ebay, a fella willing to look will find left and right handed Warthog risers, compound and recurve limbs 40-65#, a Damon Howatt Warthog iron on t shirt transfer and even some notorious East Side Archery "Nimrod" private label limbs made by Howatt.HAKUNA MATATA

I owned a Warthog compound. Bought it new in 78.
Part of my temporary venture away from recurves. Sold it to a guy who shot in an indoor league with me.
Soon after, the limbs cracked at the fork where the wheels were mounted. I offered to give his money back, but he said no and just ordered new limbs for it.
Soon after I went back to shooting a recurve.

I have a Warthog right handed, with the compound limbs however. Have thought many times about getting the recurve limbs for the riser... Perfect storm.. Dang It.

That riser makes a fine platform for a Frankenbow. You do have to change the limb alignment system if you want to use other limbs though.
I may have to get another one. I really like the grip on it.

The take-off angle is not correct for recurves without a wedge to lessen the angle. We made recurves for them for a few years.

Yes, it's a pretty sharp angle. I plan to make a few take downs but since they are all lefties it's a low priority.

Any pictures? I have a “Bobcat” riser which was my son’s first heavy weight compound. I was told it was made the same way as the Warthog only different materials. I was thinking about milling out the wedge area to get the proper limb angle. I swear they used a 4x4 block of Actionwood to make the riser.

I wasn't saying that all warthog risers were actionwood but that the ones I have are all actionwood.

As always, great info from Larry!
If you were looking at just the riser, how would you know a Compound from a Recurve from a reworked compound that could blow on you without warning?

The risers were the same for both warthog compounds and recurves in bulk and grip size. Really no difference unless it had been reworked after market. From the first shipment of 1/10th laminated maple, all warthogs were laminated. Took a bit to find a reliable vendor. As the price of maple veneer soared due to purchases by Japan, almost every laminator went to birch, and we used less and less laminated blocks for everything we did. The compounds went to metal only.

If I were looking to build an MTD type recurve I'd look for either a warthog A bubinga riser or an MTD bubinga riser. They were bubinga with 2 verticle stripes. As for the ball bearings I believe all martin compounds used them in the late 70s and early 80s.

The ones I have are all identical to this. There's a lot of meat left on these. I'll put some on the classifieds in case anyone is interested.

Mike, the one you posted is an unfinished blank that was shaped on an Zuchermann automat and not finish shaped by hand. Didn't know any of those left our shop!!

Iwander, that’s the riser I have. The grey action wood. I see you added wedges to the limb or to riser. I was trying to figure out a way to machine the limb pads to the right angle. I have access to a wood milling machine.
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Larry, so that came out of your shop? The shaping is very consistent and leaves quite a bit of room for individualization. Limb pads are very consistent. Would be easy to adapt to a pin alignment as opposed to the ball bearings. If they weren't all lefties I'd have done something with them by now.

No, the 2814 came later. The limb writing stands for "Martin Take Down Limb", MTDL I've shot bare fingered all my life, but I grew up with hard callouses on my hands and fingers from ranch work. Only time I use a glove is with skinny fast flight strings on a flight bow.

This is what Larry said about I THINK the same bow in 2013.
"thanks for the pictures! that bow was never called "nimrod". it was called a #2430 warthog "a" t.d.. it should have a whd, 1977-1988 production years. from 1988-1992 we had an A plus that had a black laminated riser with zebrawood overlays. we built them at howatts, both the riser and limbs."
