How are you removing the lettering/decal from carbon arrows. In the past this was easily removed using acetone.

The folks at gold tip must have changed something ! The last batch of traditional shafts the lettering will not come off with acetone.

I tried a number of things including mineral spirits, alcohol, citrus base paint remover.

Going to purchase some MEK and try . Has anyone used it?

Thanks for your input.

Why bother.

I use a fillet knife.

I hear a belt sander works good.

What is MEK? Acetone has worked for me too, but I shoot beman center shot.

I just did some Black Eagles with actone. If you use MEK, make sure you wear latex gloves and are in a well ventilated area (preferably outside).

Actually MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) is a milder solvent than lacquer thinner. I used to wash aircraft parts with it and we'd be up to our elbows in the stuff.

I've had the best luck with the lacquer thinner and a steel wool pad.

I've used a scrubbie pad with an oxidizing cleanser such as Ajax or Comet, per Viper.

I think MEK is also what we used at McDonnell Aircraft to clean out the fuel cells of F4s.

And make sure you aren't in an enclosed area if you use it.

I just got some gold tips a week ago and I removed the lettering with acetone and steel wool . It came off a lot harder than the older ones .

I use a product Called oops and 00 steel wool. Comes right off very easy. Just did a dozen for my wife. Then clean wit alcohol. Super easy.

Green scotch pad and elbow grease. Works every time.

Is it that distracting? I don't think I get the mindset of removing all the writing.

From: Dan Jones

There is a huge increase in arrow speed by removing all of that lettering.

From: badguybuster

I use some 800 grit sandpaper. works well

From: Supernaut

I wasn't distracted by the graphics on my arrows. I removed the graphics because I wanted to. I figured since I bought them I could do what I wanted with them.

My reason is that they look more like wood with all the lettering off them.

I don't get it. The OP asked a question and gets lit up by some for doing what he wants to do with his property.

I bought some GT blems and used acetone and 0000 steal wool to remove the lettering.

I don't think asking why they're doing it is 'lighting them up'. Now if I would have said they were a silly old knee cap, or said their mama wore combat boots, well then yeah. Otherwise I just asked why they did it. Seems one or two of them got a little testy with that though.

Here's one reason I asked....I can easily forget what I'm shooting if the size at least isn't marked on the arrow. But anyway, don't fret over it.

From: Rough Run

I use acetone and 0000 steel wool to remove the lettering. I remove it because I like to cap paint and crest, and the lettering interferes with a good finish, or clutters the work and looks horrible. I only shoot 500 or 600 spine carbons, so they are easy to remember as I only do 6 or 12 at a time, all matching. And, since I am a little obsessive, I keep a note pad with all the descriptions and info on the shafts I make up - just in case they last long enough for me to forget, or accumulate so many arrows that I can't keep them all straight!

I agree with George.

I don’t think it is about who we agree with...it is about the different ways of getting writing off of a carbon arrow. I have used steel wool. If that didn’t work very well, I added acetone with it. That was on arrow dynamics, I have not bought any other carbons for many years.

From: walltent

the original question was how, not why.

From: Jon Stewart
Date: 22-May-19

Why ask the OP WHY he is doing something when all he asked is how. It happens more than not on here when questions are asked. You wonder why folks move on from here.

Like I said I don't get it.

Thanks to those of you that contributed good advise. I appreciate the help !

"Is it that distracting? I don't think I get the mindset of removing all the writing " Sorry George ! You don't deserve, nor do I need to give you a reason why I want to do something.

I just shoot them enough times for the target to rub it off. Some of the lettering on arrows is a bit over the top. Very similar to ILF limbs. I feel like I'm advertising for the manufacturer. Maybe I'll try some acetone and steel wool to get rid of that big ugly BLEMISH marking on my arrows.

Some of you guys are grumpier than I am. Sheesh.

From: Babysaph

Where here is a different way. Use 80'grit paper on them. It comes right off.

Exactly Big Nine.. Some need to go tune there geetar..

From: Tedd

Some dissolve better with other chemicals, denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, acetone. Depends what kind of paint it was printed. Sometimes I take the writing off. I really like Black Eagle shafts but if you cap and crest them they get a little to busy with all the writing. Not to change the subject but I think Black Eagle shafts a better than anything on the market. Tedd
