My Mom is visiting for the first time in a couple years and this is the first time for her to get to see our first house - so I missed the Shoot. At 86, who knows how many more times I’ll get to enjoy her company, so not a fun call, but an easy one to make!

Show me what I missed??

For us folks in other parts of the country, what does Cos Cob stand for. Is the name initials or an abbreviation of other words? Just curious. I googled it up but only found Cos Cob with no other name. Thanks.

Probably derives from Dutch, like the word 'kill' for stream or river. Fairly common north of NYC.

There are a lot of interesting names around here... I live near the Byram River; legend has it that the Natives called it that because it was the river they traveled to go Buy Rum.

Meanwhile, PETA or some similarly useless group was petitioning a few years ago to change the name of the Catskills (“kill” being Dutch, I believe, for Creek or Stream). They said it sounds mean.

What's the count of shooters that attended? Weather was great.

Right? LOL

Reminds me of the guy who lost his job because he used the word “niggardly” and someone who didn’t know what it meant but didn’t like the sound of it was offended by it..

I heard the turnout was around half of what we got last year; vendors made out real well, but it’s a good thing Groundstalker Mike was thrifty on the set-up, because the gate wouldn't have paid for many new 3Ds...

Gets tough when other shoots scheduled around the original date and stacked up on the plans B and C instead!

At Algonquin we felt the same way, Cos Cob picked our date. We had forty shooters for a two day shoot. Not only yours, but another east of us drew away shooters.

Many club members get discouraged, but I thoroughly enjoyed preparing the grounds and course. What does concern me is the kitchen breaking even. In bygone days we had shooters buying desert(Robin's dense chocolate sheet cake) before shooting, just so it would be there when they got back. I provided a brown chunky venison chili(no tomato), but burgers and dogs seem to have lost appeal. The usual bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll didn't fare well either. I wouldn't mind offering grilled chicken breast sandwiches, just to test the appeal, and a variety of sauces could enhance their sales.

I suspect the exodus of state residents has seriously affected available shooters in this state. A few members have left the state also. A decline in face to face social contact may play into the reduced numbers also. Perhaps an event that plays social media into the shoot could help. Something like a Pokemon or geocache item search within the shoot could bring in heretofore unknown persons. We use to go to black powder trail walks, where finding concealed items on the course provided a few extra points to your score.

"Greenwich", as pronounced by lifelong residents is "Grenitch".

Mike, Pete and the Cos Cob crew did another great job setting up the course and the food was again plentiful and terrific.

This is a group of "Gentlemen" who shot ahead of my son and I during the AM portion. It was just as entertaining watching them shoot and break on each other as we had shooting the course.

As a famous army Sargent often said - "I know nothing"

You got lucky on that mule deer, brother! If you hit that one where you would actually hit spine, it will crush your arrow and spit the nock right back at you! (we’re talking to the manufacturer about that!)

And for anybody who’s thinking about attending this event next year, or who would like to come to one of our open shoots… That big white donut in the background is on a lane which allows for shots in excess of 80 yards. And there are a few saplings up the hill behind it dead center, so that you can hold point on the tree and drop an arrow into that really big mat. Helps keep cost down quite a bit!

BTW - that’s one dead Elk!! I love that station because there are 2 full-sized Bull targets and plenty of opportunities for shooting out to about 60-65, maybe more.

Maybe I'm missing something but wondering why a shot to center lungs is lucky? Where else should I've actually hit it?
