Patience is a virtue, both in hunting Morels and waiting for your thread to open.

We call those 'black mushrooms', they come first and usually around tulip poplar, sometimes ash and elm too.

Here in the eastern Alleghenies they take a bit longer. Usually we are finding the lighter ones the first week of May. If it stays warm though, the dark ones should be popping pretty quickly here.

I picked many of those in my early years, with and for my great-grandmother. All I ever knew them by was "woodfish" - is that a common nickname, or just from our area?

Rough Run must be an old nickname of your-that area. My grandma got me started in hunting for mushrooms too.

Rough Run....that's what my grandparents called them too. They were from the mountains of southwest Virginia. Whatever you call them they eat good.

Thanks, guys - southern West Virginia born and raised, so it must be a regional nickname!

You had a better day then me. I heard no gobbles, and found no morels. Enjoy....
