"Dark Timber" arrows are in! Seems like I've been talking about these forever. What they are is a wood grained finish, 5/16" carbon shaft at a very affordable price in spines and weights as follows: 340 = 10.1 gpi 400 = 9.5 gpi 500 = 8.5 gpi 600 = 7.5 gpi 700 = 6.5 gpi 800 = 6.0 gpi

The "Dark Timber"s are my own personal brand made by a reputable company for me. It has taken me over a year to get them how I wan't them.. and may still be minor changes in the future such as the graphics may change slightly and the length may change. Right now, all lengths are 33"s long. In an effort to keep the pricing down, I may have to drop them to 32"s. It's not about the amount of material, but the extra inch results in a higher percentage of shafts getting culled due to straightness.

WARNING!!! DON'T USE ACETONE ON DARK TIMBER SHAFTS!!!

Denatured alcohol is ok, but the acetone may smudge the finish.

I have been shooting these for 9 months now and have had not had any finish wear off at all. The shafts are consistent and very durable, but the pattern DOESN'T LIKE ACETONE!

Having said all that, if you were quick and used a light touch to remove the graphics, it may not hurt, but you have been warned.

The Dark Timbers have an inside diameter of .245. They will not accept the "Gold Tip" nocks and inserts. However, they will accept the brass inserts not made by Gold Tip... We have brass inserts that will fit these as well.

Also, the components are very reasonable: nocks or inserts $5.99 per dz and brass inserts for $8.99 per dz. The inserts will work in Gold Tips as they are the same size as the original brass.

Thanks, BigJim

Jim the shafts come with the inserts and nocks for $60 correct.

Yes, they come with both inserts and nocks for that price.

Thanks for the acetone tip, I'm use to aluminum. Really like the looks and price, think I'll try a batch even though I don't use carbon the tite wad in says "do it ".

Oh and I don't mind graphics.

I am going to foot mine to see if I can make them a little more concrete and rock proof. Not that I am going to “torture” any on purpose.

What larger company made these, and where?

I'm shooting Axis trads #600 with brass inserts and (recently...for lighter bow) the much lighter #700/skinny with aluminum inserts...the #600s have been flogged with zero breakage.

Easton sez Axis #600s are very straight...and sez the #700s and #800s are a lot less straight...

I wonder if Dark Timber are re-badged Axis?

From: Wayne Hess
Date: 09-Apr-19

Isn’t a Axis shaft a skinny shaft , while the Dark Timber are a 5/16 diameter shaft. Different !

From: jk
Date: 09-Apr-19

Wayne...I think you're right...thats a possible argument in favor of the Axis skinny which is somehow same gpi as Dark whatsis...which suggests Axis may have thicker walls at same weight...which is tougher?

I've not yet busted any Axis so far, which means I'm not trying hard enough...but I'll be shooting the 5mm at a rough n' tumble 3d this weekend so maybe I'll learn something the hard way...like I did with a bunch of bargain GT trads.

Date: 09-Apr-19

Well how do you like that- I just ordered a dozen Bemans from you yesterday! Next batch....

From: SB
Date: 09-Apr-19

Couldn't you cut the cost by completely eliminating the grafics? Nobody wants that on thier arrows anyway!

These are not made by Easton. By the way, I think Easton and Beman shafts are great shafts. In no way am I claiming that these are better other than looks and being more affordable. By the way, they look much better in person. The light of the camera and the close up shot of the shaft takes away from its true appearance.

I sell a bunch of Beman centershots but very few Axis because of the price. The plans for the future are to have the 700s and 800s done in the smaller .204 ID shafts, just so archerys with lighter bows can use these as well... the smaller ID puts them closer to center.

I won't be changing the 600's - 340's however.

It's unlikely leaving off the grapics will save much of any money. A dollar or two per dz maybe and if it did, I would keep that money! It is very difficult to make a living in this business and we need all the help we can get :)

Thanks for all the replies. BigJim

Big Jim, I for one will pass this on to my shooting buddies. You’re actually less expensive than the GT blems I saw on the bay.

From: Little Billy
Date: 09-Apr-19

Very cool. How would a guy get him some?

31 is plenty long for that big of a variety in sizes.

340s could stay long.

I like the graphics! Is that 60 for a dz shafts? What's the straightnes?

Check out our website at bigjimsbowcompany.com to find out more.

They are .006 straightness... typical of most shafts.

Yes, $59.99 per dz including nocks and iserts.

Thanks ya'll, BigJim

I checked these out at the KY tradfest. They are great looking shafts. I would have bought a dozen but my wallet was too thin by the time I saw them. I'll pick up a dozen or two at the Classic.

From: Griz
Date: 10-Apr-19

BigJim, awesome opportunity for those who shoot carbon. Thank you for the work (and money!) you've put into making this possible. It's a heck of a deal, especially considering that carbon shafts last virtually forever (until lost, really, or the victim of a "Robin Hood").

From: Live2hunt
Date: 10-Apr-19

That's a hell of a deal. I may have to try a dozen to see if I want to make the switch from aluminum. I just never wanted to take and launch a 30.00 arrow setup through the woods let alone a 15.00 setup and may never get it back.

From: motherlode

I like the thought of the 700s being 5/16 and will order some before you make the change.

From: Longcruise
Date: 10-Apr-19

This is a dumb question from a wood shooter, but if I bought these what would I use to cut them shorter?

Dremel with hard-to-find 1 1/2" ezlock cutting disc.

From: rabbitman Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 10-Apr-19

I also use a Dremel tool and place the shaft in a v-notched wooden jig I made and turn it by hand while cutting. Great looking shafts. Picked up a dozen from Jim at the Tradfest. Can't wait to make them up and try them out.

From: Longcruise

Guess I need to upgrade form my hacksaw! :^)

From: jk
Date: 10-Apr-19

..with Dremel, you may have to make an initial cut in order to let the blade get to the place you want to cut...I use a jig like rabbitman's but mine locks the Dremel in place and allows the shaft to be rolled right up to it. I've actually received pre-cut carbons that weren't squared away...

I bought some 800 spine at the Ky Trad Fest. I got them fletched and shot them the past few days. I am very happy with them. They are a bargain in my opinion. Thanks Big jim.

What poundage bow are you shooting them with Shipsey River?

And Jim how much you reckon to send a dozen to Australia? It's OK- I'm sitting down and have taken my heart meds:) JayInOz

I have shot them from my 33# ILF bow and from a 35# longbow. These arrows are 33". I am still working on the proper length for these bows.

JayinOz.., I can send a bow to oz for about $55 +-. I would guess about half that but don't quote me on that. I'm not smart enough to work in the office and difinetly not to handle shipping.

We sell a 2" chopsaw that we purchase from harbor freight. We add an abrasive wheel and retail them for $50 I believe. You can save yourself a few bucks if your close to a HF and the find an abrasive wheel.... This is for cutting carbon shafts.

I may keep the 700's at 5/16" and down size the 800's to smaller diameter... or have some of both. Thanks, BigJim

Thanks for the replies. Jim I was going to buy a split finger tab from a fellow Leatherwaller. Postage was 40 US- just under $56 Australian. For a tab! At that rate I thought I'd have to sell one of my grandkids to get something big sent out here:) JayInOz

I can't say for sure what size footing it would take, but I'm sure there is a aluminum shaft that will do the job nicely.

FYI, I attempted to remove a logo with denatured alcohol.. NOGO, but it didn't damage anything as that I already knew.

So, I dampened a rag with acetone and gingerly rubbed the logo. It comes off easily. As long as you are careful, I believe you can remove them with acetone and not hurt the finish. I know that too much acetone will damage the wood grain.. use it at your own risk. It won't hurt the shaft itself though. BigJim

Not too hard to hit a tree, a barrel or a block at 12-15 yards :)

dallsheepstkr, I shoot 340's with 300g up front out of a 67 lb bows. Not likely that I would ever come out with a 250 or 200 spine. Not that I wouldn't want to help out, but it would be throwing money away. If I had 50 dz made (very small amount), it would be a lifetime supply. Just not enough guys shooting those weights anymore. BigJim

From: dallsheepstkr

Huh when I tried a .340 out of my recurve with 150 up front it almost flew sideways. Is there a big difference between longbows and curves? Never shot a longbow.

From: BigJim Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 12-Apr-19
BigJim is a Stickbow.com Sponsor - Website

LongTrad, if your drawing to 43lbs, I would look at the 600's. The point weight doesn't mean that much to me. You can easily make up for that by cutting the shaft slightly. BigJim

From: M60gunner
Date: 12-Apr-19

I got the doz I ordered today. Love the quick service, thanks Big Jim. I am going to leave the graphics they’re not in my way. I will admit I like the info on the shaft especially cause I make arrows of different spines. I like the darker color of the shaft and the style of nocks. Now to ponder what colors of wrap and fletch I will try.

Are the brass inserts you sell for these threaded all the way through?

From: Sparky
Date: 13-Apr-19

Or the standard inserts they come with?

From: trad47
Date: 13-Apr-19

I’d like to get a dozen. 600 cut to 28” but only question is whether I want the 50 gr brass insert or the standard. The idea is to tweak the arrow weight & the the GPP.

From: M60gunner
Date: 13-Apr-19

Sparky, I just looked at the inserts I got with my order of 600 spine. Yes, they are threaded in back.

Yes, as mentioned, the standard inserts are threaded to accept adaptors, The brass are not threaded in the rear.

We are working on the listing... not sure if it will be possible with our current website, but I'm wanting to make it where you can choose your nock color, and also which inserts you want.

The brass are of course a small upcharge, but you wouldn't be paying for the standards that way. It may not be possible and we are way under staffed to take all the orders over the phone.

Thanks, BigJIm

From: Jimbob

Just a FYI on this. The 800 spine shafts can be footed with a 2013. It's a perfect fit. Don't know about the other spines yet. So far I am really liking these shafts.
