The river crested a week ago but has not started falling at my home and shop. The hobby shop still has 2 1/2 feet of water inside. The house is still dry inside but with only 17" to give and the spring snow melt is coming from my friends in the north. Hopefully I can dodge two bullets back to back.

James

Looks like the house was built just for this one!

I feel for you, bud... We got flooded out in Sandy what, 6-7 years ago? Things just haven’t been same since!

OMG Jim what a mess. Don't even mention Sandy it was so bad I will never forget it.

When they Opened NJ for the 1rst day after the storm I had 21 truck claims on me by the the end of the day I had 2,100 claims that week I had taken in 5,600.00 claims. Then it started to say no more I can't do it. Company's said just take the work and whenever you get it done. I had to turn off my phones and faxs ect. so company's could not reach me. I got a pager and only answered select carriers that I normally dealt with. I would have to call them and say ok ready now for you to send over what you needed. I had to stop the insanity or I couldn't get anything done. They were easier claims mostly all total loss's.

I ended up taking aspirin every 4 hours usually I was so stressed out. You know what that meant some of you.

When i say claims each claim usually had multiple units to inspect like equipment and related.

I had 5 tow trucks at one location a tow facility then I saw John Deer equipment next to them all brand new mowers and equipt. getting powerwashed. They cam over to me and asked if might be from Harleysville? I don't have your claim yet. As I was wrapping up I got a call you have that claim also do the best you can with today Glenn.

It was unfortunate for people that lost everything but that storm kept people working for 5 to 6 years later.

I never realized the full force of water until I saw it up real.

I can't even Imagine having to go through this directly and sustain a loss of this magnitude.

Lord help them all they need the mighty hand placed upon all of them.

We had the second highest river level (TN River) in recorded history and plenty of flooding in the low spots but nothing like you guys are experiencing.

Years ago I my family was flooded in for 2 weeks, we lived in an old farm house at the foot of a mountain but above the floodplain. We had no power or water but did have a coleman stove and a spring to haul water from in buckets.

I have changed houses three times since then but altitude has been primary concern no matter where I bought a house since the flood we were in. My current house is up on a ridge at least 100 ft higher than the floodplain.

I feel your pain, we had almost four feet or river in our house during hurricane Harvey. Took me a year to rebuild the house but it’s better than before. Still working on my garage/shop.

Hang in there and take it day at a time, i’ll Pray.

From: George Tsoukalas

Oh no. I pray the waters recede soon. George

Once the water reseeds how do you guys in flood zones get rid of the mold and the muddy smell or whatever else. What about the snakes looking for ground? That would freak me out I would have to leave those ares if I could.

Does insurance cover it?

I looked at this again today and thought wow maybe things aren't as rough as I thought here and better be thankful this morning no matter what goes down. It can be a whole lot worse.

I had this house raised two feet last year to hopefully avoid the situation I have now. This house was bought as a hunting camp but we do spend most of the year there and my little bow (hobby) shop is located there. I am currently looking for another house away from the Mississippi Delta and on a tall hill. I did look into buying flood insurance but the cost was $5,500 a year and that was just to cover the structure.

The Mississippi does what she dang well pleases for sure. Hope it works out for you to the better. The folks up in the Dakota areas are getting unprecedented floods this spring and farmers are in a bad situation.

RymanCat, since you asked,

When we got back in our house it looked like a whirlpool had been inside. Furniture had floated to new locations, refrigerators floated and toppled over, washer and dryer had floated and turned over. Thousands of small shad minnows were dead in the yard, and a smell only time and nature cured.

We removed all appliances, electrical outlets (to bare wires), built in cabinets, plumbing fixtures, even tubs, to bare piping, and all sheetrock. Nothing but bare studs below four feet remained.

I replaced the air conditioning and ran the dew point down and kept it down. We ran about a dozen fans 24 hours a day for weeks while we power-washed, scrubbed, disinfected and remediated.

Then, we rebuilt. And now it's better than before.

JamesV, I hope I did not hijack your thread. I know you are in a predicament and I hope the at least the water does not enter your house. RymanCat's question reminded me of why I aged about twenty years in the last year and a half.

My thoughts are with you James. Looks like the foresight to raise the house was a great idea. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through. hang in there. Lance

I feel for you my friend and I understand what you are going thru. The Missouri River is still 4 miles wide here and multiple breaks in the levee system.

well..............

It's been a little over two months and the water has come up another 15" since I posted the first pictures of my house and shop. On a good note: I did buy another house and the new one is on a hill. My neighbor did send me this picture, showing an alligator in front of my house. Don't look like the water will go down and dry up before hunting season this year anyway.

I have river property also, so I'm not trying to be a smart ass if I ask; is gator hunting permitted?

From: JamesV
Date: 16-Jun-19

Daniel............

I think you have to apply for a special permit to hunt gators in Mississippi.

James

I'm still sweating it out in Satartia. My camp is not levee protected. Was bow fishing in the front yard in April, I had about 3 ft to spare, will be there this weekend (bringing a kayak) to check on things.

Good luck James.

Yes, application needed for gators.
