I am making my first bbi. I have glued in 1/4 " deflex and 1 1/4 reflex. Stave is 68" shooting for 45@ 29. Boo is 1/8" ipe is 7/16 @ fades to 1/4" at tips. Side taper is 1 1/4 @fades to 3/8 @ tips. Off the form it feels like a 2x6. How fast will weight come off with scraping or should I bandsaw belly a 1/8"? Any ideas appreciated. Carl

Don't bandsaw the belly. Too hasty. Too risky.

It's hard to give specific advice without seeing it in person. Is it going to have a flat belly or radiused? How long is the handle area dip to dip?

To get where you're headed, it should probably be narrowed some. Go a little at a time and keep track of your centerline, remove the exact same amount from each side. I'd move toward 1" wide at the flares, but would ultimately let limb strength dictate where it ended up as far as width. Then I'd start thinning it with a fine toothed rasp and scraper to get some limb movement. Keep an eye on the thickness, and if it starts getting thin, narrow it a little more rather than continuing to reduce thickness.

You have quite a bit of thickness taper already, so I'd also be mindful of wood removal/thickness in the outer limb. As you try to reduce weight you don't want it to get whip-ended.

That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks Jeff. I'll work it over and get some pics up.

Got it narrowed to 1"@ dips which are 12" apart. Pics are braced, [email protected] unbraced. I am shooting for 45@29. I'm thinking left side inner 1/3 needs more bending. HELP! Carl

Actually, to me the left limb looks really good. The right limb 'looks like' it's bending too much right off of the dips, but I suspect there may be something else making it appear that way, because it looks different/slightly hinged there unstrung and at brace there as well. I would double check the thickness of the ipe throughout that area. Does the ipe get thicker under that first bamboo node? Is the bamboo node causing a stiff spot in the limb right there. It could be a glue up thing. It could be nothing to worry about.
