True shell Cordovan leather is pretty much considered THE STUFF for shooting tabs. Sure I've found a few acceptable substitutes over the years, but really, cordovan is what the best tabs are made of.
For anybody interested in either making their own, or repairing a worn out favorite, I do know where to get 4" x 4" squares of cordovan. Bigger pieces of high quality Cordovan for less money than what is available elsewhere. Just PM me if interested.

For the face I use cordovan with cowhide for the backing, loop and spacer.
I've made some good purchases of leather on ebay. Cordovan was available from razor strops.

I have the back hide from Kudu, wildebeest, Red hartebeest and Nyala. All make good tabs, one thickness is OK, two if preferred. One hide will probably do a hundred or so. Haven't tried the hair side yet but will try that next one. It appears that Impala might make a good substitute for Cordovan.

I get my leather from old wallets and women's purses from 2nd hand stores. Sometimes from old boots. I have an entire tanned cow skin that I face some of them with.

Shameless plug. 8^)
My tabs are pricey, but there is "zero" material in a tab out there today that will give you as slick of a release as ballistic nylon as the string face. None, Zip, Nada.
No, that nylon will not last you as long as cordovan leather will, BUT if you occasionally lubricate it it will last you long enough to get way more than your money's worth out of it, and that's a long LONG time.
Then, there's that break in factor. My tabs require "zero" break in. They shoot the same from shot #1 as they do at shot #100,000.
Their only real drawback is you can't trim them, but with a little communication on size requirement during your request for one they can be built where you "don't have to" trim them, and even be built to a completely "custom size" (for a little extra charge) if that's what you require.

Here are 3 custom size tabs I just finished up for a feller.
3-7/16" wide top to bottom.
They are a custom size build of my 3 under Signature with string walking stitching.
