Hey all,

I saw some videos on YT the other day and it was something I had never seen before, mature hogs, both boars and sows, were being called into shooting distance with an electronic device similar to those callers that broadcast distress sounds to lure in predators.

This thing was a battery powered speaker that looked like about a 2 foot tall bullet. They had the sounds and the controls on their cell phone which connected to the speaker via Bluetooth.

They were gun hunting and the guys wife was the one doing the shooting. They would turn it on, select what sound they wanted to use and by the magic of video, about 5 minute later they would show a nice BIG boar coming right towards that speaker. He was obviously curious about what was making those sounds he was hearing. All the "calls" I heard them play were hog related type sounds like boars fighting, sows calling for a lost piglet, sows asserting herself over a boar trying to breed her and so on. I didn't check the price of the setup, but it looked interesting. I never knew that hogs would respond to calls like that. Now I'm just going by what I saw on the video, but these hogs were coming to the calls.

Does anyone know about feral hogs and trying to call them in for a shot? Ever tried it? What's your thoughts on it? Is a hog "calling" gizmo a waste of money or is it something you'd like to have and use?

What do you think?

Thanks for your time and help. Larry

Interesting, as a kid in the 50's we raised 100's of pigs. I know a sow will respond aggressively to the sound of a piglet in distress, so it would make sense.

Foxpro has hog sounds. I think it really depends on a lot of factors, but definitely yes.

I've grunted at them at close range in tall grass or stuff and had them get close enough to shoot with my bow. I've have gotten them up from from their beds with grunting not knowing if they were in the thick cover or not. The young ones seem to grunt and come towards you in my experience. I've had only one sow come to a distress call from a piglet. Most of the time when a pig I've shot squeals all others high tail out of there.

A sow still nursing will come unglued if she hears a small pig squealing. I had a couple piglets get separated from momma and she about tore the building down trying to get to them.

Like Dm/Wolfskin said. I have "grunted" at pigs in tall grass and thicket and had them come close enough for a shot. So I think there is a real possibility of being able to call one in providing the tone and pitch are familiar to the population. I may look further into this as our season changes into the warm cycle. Might be interesting.

Sure - hide good and holler SOOOEY!

Seriously though, I would guess that you can. In my own experience, when I have grunted at them with my deer grunt, they didn't like it and quickly left.

Yes you can call hogs. I have done it many times. I do think they would have to be close by even though you may not see them due to thick cover. I use a deer grunt call, rapid short grunts sound similar to a hog. Just play with the deer call and get what sounds good to ya. I learned it from one of Dan Fitzgerald hog hunting videos. So I gave it a try and it works great. Give it a try and best of luck !

I do use it either around feeding grounds for the hogs or close to bedding areas. I have even called one in I could see at a distance.

Javelina will come to calls. Never had a hog respond to a call. But had a $20.00 bill work once.

Don't know about hogs, but in Pa. some of the best calls for wild turkey in the spring are made by manure spreaders.

I used a call in Northern California a few years ago. I saw a huge boar about 150 yards away. I used the sounds of group of hogs feeding. That boar came in so fast. Came in head on to about 10 ft. I couldn't get any other hogs to respond rest of the hunt, so yes, it works, but not all the time.

If they could only make a call that would make them go away...

For whatever reason I know of paddling close to the bank has attracted hogs in the dark. My thought is they think it's fish.

Go on YouTube and search for hog calling and ignore all the results from county fairs with the fat women standing at microphones.

The ones I have seen are impressive. Now to be clear, I have no idea if the videos are edited in such a way to make it LOOK like these hogs are coming in to this sound device or not. They are clearly advertising or promoting a product in these videos. It looks like they are selling a speaker that’s battery powered and connects to your smart phone via Bluetooth. The particular sound files are kept on your phone and I don’t know anything more other than that.

In the videos, the hogs, both boars and sows come in quite rapidly when they start the calling. They shoot them with a rifle at that point. No bows from what I’ve seen.

If you can’t find the videos and want to see them, PM me and I’ll get a link for you.

Thanks all. Larry

Dying rabbit call works well. Be ready to shoot, things can happen fast.

I have hunted hogs quite a bit in the southeast and in Texas. Yes, you can call hogs that are close by imitating soft grunts and squeels, especially if the foliage is thick and limiting visibility. Imitating a feeding hog by chomping your jaws loudly can work well as they think a nearby hog is eating all the food and they want in on the action. I am a bit skeptical that long range calling would work well.

Domestic pigs come to all sorts of calls, no reason that feral hogs would not.

My old man calls them in. He says "you must become the pig". He grunts at them and all kinds of weird stuff. And he kills the crap out of them. He stalks around with his AR and thermal scope at night and brings them in. He can make them do certain things and make them come to certain sounds and all that jazz. He is a strange bird, but i kid you not, he can "become the pig".
