Hello all I have been shooting a recurve for 15 years I have taken bear, whitetails, javelena, geese and small game with a assortment of curves. Ilfs bears and three piece takedowns. All around the 60 inch range. I am looking at getting a bear super mag 48 for hunting out of tree stands I am wondering if they really are terrible to shoot like everywone reports or are these guys not giving this bow a fair shake. Thank you for all your imput I greatly appreciate any thoughts good or bad!

Trad Yooper I hope you get a lot of feedback because I've been thinking about getting a Bear Super Mag 48 myself.

They are cool little bows but my draw is just to long for them. My draw length is a little over 29 inch. If your draw length is 28 or less you may love the bow. Some people do with longer draws . I think the 52 inch Kodiak Magnum is a lot nicer bow . I have had several of them .

I draw 29.5-30 and shot one for the first time the other day. Seemed with this bow all the rumors were unfounded. Granted i only shot it a few times, it wasn't stacky, and it wasn't twitchy. Didn't notice any finger pinch either. So i thought about it a couple of days and started looking for one, but i found a k mag instead. I wouldn't be scared of the supermag though, and if i didn't find a used supermag/k mag i was figuring on buying a new supermag, they are pretty reasonable. I will say that it did seem a little sluggish, but i was only looking for a 15-20 yard bow so i wasn't too worried about it. Jeff Kavanaugh has a video on one you might want to look at

I shot them for a few years, very good bow. I shot them as well as any other bow in those days.

Very good bow. Love to shoot mine every day.

They shoot nice, if you draw over 28" they will fail. Maybe not the first few shots, but soon.

I do think it depends on the draw length of the archer doing the talking. Longer drawing archers fall out of love pretty quick. Standard and under draws get along with them fine. I haven't found a short bow yet that I could shoot half way decent. Still looking to try a Little Suckling and a Shrew though. I won't buy either without shooting it for a while. I don't need any more wall hangers. >>>>-----> Ken

I’ve had mine for about 20 years and have had no issues. Granted I don’t shoot it as much as I used to, but I fall in love with it every time that I do. I draw 27-1/2” so I can’t attest to any stacking. Not a really fast bow but steady and hard hitting. I double the Jeff Kavanaugh video! Lance

I own 2 …. fine bows !

TY -

When I was young, I really wanted one of those. After shooting one, I changed my mind. At this point after shooting a few more, I believe it's probably one of the, if not the worst production bows ever made. Too many compromises had to be used to make it even shootable.

That doesn't mean it can't be shot well by a relatively short draw shooter, but unless you have to have something that short because of shooting from a blind, or want a cute wall hanger, etc, I'd pass.

Viper out.

Like Humpy, i have two of them. .40& 45lb..but when i want a short bow its my 52in RW Hunter every time. Sandy

Love my 50# Super Mag, I use it mainly in a tree stand but it is a great bow for a blind or travel as well. I draw 27” so no pinch or stacking issues. The grip is a bit large for some to get used to.

You can get a thousand answers, half for and half against, but none of them mean a thing. You have to find one, borrow one or buy one and shoot it for awhile. That's the only way to know. You may love it or you may hate it. Doesn't matter what anyone of us thinks.

For me personally, I would opt for a 52" bow like the Kodiak Magnum, or a Nomad Stalker, or a 52" Red Wing Hunter, etc., etc. That extra 4" isn't going to matter in a blind and you won't hit the string-angle monster as quickly. The 48" is very smooth but the string angle is what gets you well before any stack. It's important to know the difference.

I am looking for another one myself. I had one for awhile, and it served very well!

I had a Gainesville 60# SM48. I sold it. I could feel the bow grip flexing on full draw (pinching inward). That tiny grip is all that was holding the weight of the force at full draw (the fulcrum). I would shoot one in lower weight. My draw is 27'.

These bows just point. Loved mine when I had it.

From: fdp

It's a very short, lightweight bow with a very high brace height.

That being said, some folks like them, some folks hate them. You are going to have to try one yourself and see what YOU think.

And understand that lots of folks hunt out treestands and ground blinds all the time with bows considerably longer than that.

I have a mint '75 model that was unshot when I got it! My wife has a rather short draw and loves it! I still haven't shot it..."wrong"- handed!

I had a 1968. I gave it a fair test over a year but had to conclude it was a twitchy and unforgiving little devil...I flipped it and was not sad to see it go.

The four inch longer Kmag made in 1962 and 1963 is a FAR better choice.

As George & Frank said some people love them, some hate them. I have a Super Mag., Ben Pearson Ambusher (48"), American Archery X48 (48"). I love to shoot all 3. If your draw is over 28" I wouldn't recommend a 48". The Kodiak Mag. 52" is a nice bow, I had one, but gave it to my Grandson. If I counted right 18 of the above posts that gave opinions 11 were good, 7 bad.

I really like mine. Don’t know why really, but I much prefer it over the Kodiak Magnum. Mine is factory camo and it’s just a cool bow.

I have a 45# one that I love. I am currently looking for a 50-60# Red or Blue stripe one. Send me a pm if anyone has one available.im Right handed Thanks

I've had 2, and liked them, but just can't shoot the darn things. I like the compact size and just overall look of the bow. Definitely operator error. Nothing wrong with the bow, I just don't shoot it well.

i guess i have a short enough draw length as my super mag shoots very well for me. had it out last evening and purty well killed my deer target

They are not as forgiving as a longer bow. I shoot mine quite often. Great bow to take roving around the woods.

I have 2 shoot good but D.L. is 26”

I cant speak to the draw length over 28" being a problem. I draw 28.5" and had zero issues with mine. Even if I pulled it another inch or so it did not stack. That said, I have never seen or heard of any longer armed shooters having trouble. I did have some trouble getting a good clean release and that was because the angle of the string gave me a little finger pinch. At the time, an older more experienced shooter told me to make an effort to pre spread my fingers a little before I began to draw the bow. That worked, but I didn't always remember, so I got one of those Saunders tabs with the spacer between first and second fingers and tried it. Helped but the spacer wasn't quite wide enough, so i made one wider and used it. Worked great for me. You really should find someone that has one or if local ask to shoot the one you are looking at to buy. Mine shot good, but in all fairness I was shooting a Kodiak Magnum prior. One thing about Bear bows...they really are like real estate in that there is no way to lose. Buy one, try it out for a while and if you don't like it hang it on the wall to sell on a rainy day. You will at the very least get your money back. All that said, I did not necessarily use mine in my treestand. I hunted with much longer bows with no problem up high. I never did shoot sitting down though. I like my treestands to all have a high seat that I am almost just leaning on and about 85% standing up already. Good hunting!!!

Not a big fan of short bows, but they are fun to shoot now and then.

I don’t know about the newer ones, but I knew a guy with a 30” plus draw, who shot them very well with 0 issues. He had a stable of the factory Camo ones in heavy draw weights. I watched him make some incredible shots with those bows.
