Ran across these xx75's 1816. Crested and numbered 1 thru 12, although 4 and 11 are missing. Can someone clue me in as to the why and maybe who made them. Would I spoil anything by putting on new feathers and nocks as needed.
Thanks Tom

With wood arrows, numbering them was an accepted practice, given shaft to shaft inconsistencies. With aluminum and to a lesser degree carbon, it's more to convince the shooter his fliers are due to user error and not a particular shaft. But yes, if one shaft consistently doesn't group with the herd, closer inspection is necessary.
If you wanted to keep them original, then yes, refletching is a no-no. A half way measure would be to mask the cresting and strip the paint from the fletched part of the arrows and refletch. You'll loose the original cap dip, but you can re-dip or use an arrow wrap to make them look original.

The numbers were so the shooter could tell which arrow was impacting or flying funny.
You can remove feathers with a sharp knife carefully. Make a cut down each side of feather and then under. Then adjust clamp and jig so the new feather is back into the same location. No matter how careful you are some of the crown paint may come off around the feather. Squeeze the nock with pliers carefully and work your way around the nock, then a twist and nock should pop off. make sure the taper is clean. Replace with 5/16 nock.

Common practice in the 50's and 60's. We used to sell the sticker sheets back then. They were the kind you got wet and then slid on to the arrow. A tournament archer thing and used as raghorn wrote.

Thanks, I don't have a crying need for them so I will probably leave them as is. Maybe pass them on to someone who would appreciate their history.

Maybe, the Animal round only required arrows to be numbered 1,2 and 3. That's it.
The first arrow to hit any scoring area was counted. If you weren't sure, you kept shooting.
Scoring:
#1 vital = 20 points #1 Non vital = 16
#2 vital = 14 #2 non vital 10
#3 vital = 8 #3 non vital = 4
Just more useless information...

Nothing to do with scoring. It was as raghorn wrote.
