I just purchased "The American Longbow: How to Make One, and Its Place in a Good Life" by Stephen Graf. Cannot wait until it arrives. Been wanting to get this book for a while. Who else has the book and what can you tell me about your experience reading? Curious (and exited!). :)

I have not read it yet but am interested also. I will be keeping an eye on this thread.

I thing you will enjoy reading it, I know I did. I especially enjoyed the chapter on how to shoot a Hill style bow.

Very well done, both in instructions in how to build a longbow and philosophy/behavior derived from using one.

I was surprised to learn that a bow bends as a segment of two circular curves of different radii. I had always assumed it to be a parabolic function or perhaps a catenary. He also used CADD software to determine the design, which makes sense when building a "recipe" bow. Very well written with lots of thought given into why we do what we do.

Osage. They're differential radii only if you make the limbs of unequal length. Stephen builds his bows with the top limb longer than the bottom limb. A lot of bowyers don't. I've been recording this parameter on longbows that have passed through my hands for the past 30 years or so. At least half the longbows I've owned, many by known bowyers, make the top and bottom limb the same length. Just as many make the top limb longer. Long story short, there's more than one way to build a longbow. That being said, you can't go wrong following Graph's instructions.

I have the book and its an excellent read. There is a lot of information on building longbows as well as what he feels makes a good shooting bow. I think you'll really enjoy it.

Great read. The most profound aspect of the book is the consideration that the author is literally a rocket scientist yet he advocates an instinctive non mechanical shooting style and supports it with scientific reasoning.

A very well written book, presenting also a relaxed instinctive shooting training method. My longbows are ”barebows” - no leather wrap, no side or shelf protected - due to his book. He mentioned it, I tried and I liked it.

Thank you all for the feedback. I am desperately looking forward to receiving this book.
