I have what I believe to be is a 1961 Herters recurve. 62" @ 35#. Can someone confirm 1961 and tell what the letters below the numbers mean.

January, 1961...30th bow of that model made that month. Later they went to a first letter to ID the bow, and the length where the 101 is on your bow.

You've come through again George! Thanks to you I have decoded my dad's 1969 66" Perfection Sitka bow that I now have. That's the same year he got me my first "real" bow...a Bear Polar (that I still have). Thanks again George.

TY George. Anyone know what the letters below the numbers says or means?

From: Stickshooter
Date: 19-Feb-19

or even the name of this bow?

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 19-Feb-19

Stickshooter, it's a model 101. At the time they had not included the letter assigned to the model. Later they would use M for Magnum, S for Sambar, and K for Sitka, etc., and then the length of the bow. If a Sitka, it would show K60 in stead of the 101 you see now. A 62" Sambar would show, S62...then the date and number of bows.

Saw a ad about a guy that was selling about 7 Herters he must of been collecting. I never owned or shot one....what`s your opinion of these bows.

From: Stickshooter
Date: 19-Feb-19

This is only 35# so I have an add lQQking for a heavier one 45-60#. I bought it for the year made but feels really nice in the hands and shoots great. I have one a lil newer but has an odd shape to the handle and shelf that I don't like.

Herter’s recurves are at the top of my list of favorite vintage bows. They just combine everything I like in a recurve. Right now I’m only shooting an ASL or mid 50’s Bear semi recurves or static tipped Polar, or K-4. I’m sure at some point I’ll be in shooting them again.

George is close but with Herter's bow's the month always precedes the year. So your bow was actually made in November 1961 and not January.

The bow model is 10 and it #30 of the month.

Peter do u what the letters below the bow # means? My bow seems very similar to the Herters Turkish 17

From: Pdiddly
Date: 19-Feb-19

The letters are hard to read from the picture. What are they?

From: Pdiddly
Date: 19-Feb-19

Oh...I see it now.

It says LH for left hand.

From: mahantango
Date: 19-Feb-19

I think October 11, 1961. I have the exact same bow, '61 Turkish Hunter right hand 47#. Pretty nice shooter, not a rocket but nice and stable.

From: Pdiddly
Date: 19-Feb-19

mahantango..Herter's only used the month and year. 10 is the model #. 11 is the month and 61 is the year.

I have 5 Herter’s bows and this little EDB is my favorite! I’d like to find another older one like yours some day! Lance

From: Pdiddly
Date: 19-Feb-19

Lance's bow is August 1967, 42nd bow that month.

That's a big draw for a wee bow Lance!

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Peter is correct about the date...my bad, and I even know better. ;)

From: Pdiddly

One has to get up early in the morning to get ahead of Mr. Stout!!

I have several...my sister even has one! We aren't too far from where they were built! Need a lefty now,can no longer shoot right-handed.

You’re right Peter, and that’s why I call it “Mr Zippy” My 46” Perfection is 58#. Lance

Here's an International Match Hunter I once owned...Herter's bows shoot very well.

From: gluetrap

looks some what like my Turkish hunter. mine has the pirimid shelf and woven glass.

From: raghorn
Date: 20-Feb-19

Now I have to ask......when you are shooting that bow are you shooting off the shelf or off an elevated rest??????

From: Stickshooter Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 20-Feb-19

If your asking me the rest isn’t elevated just cut down front and back making a small contact area.

From: MStyles
Date: 20-Feb-19

That dark cherry colored Rosewood and the mustard colored farbenglas make for a very handsome bow.

From: Franklin

I have a chance to get a few Herter bows. One is a 52" Perfection and another is a Perfection Sambar. All things being equal which would trip your trigger?

From: SB

Sambar!

I would like to have this one back! Sambar Perfection 48@28 and 62". A sweet shooter.

Unless you have a sloped shelf area, you can shoot Herter's off the shelf just like any other bow. It's still just a bow and most that I ever checked were tillered like any other bow made back then...usually from 1/4 to 3/8 inch positive tiller.

Bob Barrie was the mind behind the Herter's design and the main bowyer as well. I don't know for sure how many they had working on making bows back in the day but they turned out a lot of bows relatively speaking. I think Bob is still around but not sure of his activity in the sport. He did go into the broadhead business in the 1970's making Rocky Mountain Razor broadheads.

Here is a better pic of the riser and shelf. The shelf is sloped

From: SB
Date: 21-Feb-19

All of mine have elevated rests due to the radical sloped shelf area.

From: DerekMac
Date: 21-Feb-19

I have had two and regret selling both....ha!

Beautiful bow, enjoy!
